FF promises to study move of Dublin Port
06 May 2007 By Richard Curran

Fianna Fail has moved one step closer towards backing the idea of moving Dublin Port to a new location.

The party’s manifesto – published last week – said if re-elected, it would examine the role of the port, taking into account its location and other factors.

The idea of moving Dublin Port to somewhere outside the city, such as north Co Dublin, was first mooted by the Progressive Democrats.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has not knocked the idea when asked about it in recent months, but the party has never committed to such a radical move.

However, the manifesto says Fianna Fail will ‘‘undertake a comprehensive study of the role of Dublin Port taking account of location, overall ports policy, transport policy, urban development and the National Spatial Strategy’’.

The reference to a study comes at a time when Irish Continental Group, owner of Irish Ferries, is the subject of a takeover battle on the Irish Stock Exchange.

Investment group,On€51, which, together with Dublin Port, owns Greenore Port in Louth, has teamed up with the Cork-based shipping firm the Doyle Group to make an offer for ICG. This is in response to a takeover offer led by ICG’s chief executive Eamonn Rothwell.

ICG has a lease on 30 acres of land at Dublin Port, while the Doyle Group also owns around 30 acres beside it.

Dublin Port tried to join the On€51/Doyle consortium in recent weeks but did not get a positive response from the Department of Transport.

Industry sources say the ICG property at the port is of little value unless Dublin Port were to move to a new location.

The PDs plan was to develop the port area into a Canary Wharf-style location with offices and luxury apartments.

A study ? They should really be starting work on that ASAP. Glad to see another party has come around to the idea though.

ok, obviously some people here have a vested interest in keeping the flats. I was just pointing out that they look crap in comparison to what they are trying to build the other side of the water

I thought this was to be one of the most important areas of the city for art. Those flats don’t enhance the experience. Neither does a bunch load of scangers coming over in track suit bottoms begging for money so they can buy some dutch gold.

I wouldn’t be surprised Phil. The city has an awful lot of work to do. Some of the parts of the city are horrendous.

We can relocate those people who come from a lower social economic background to brand new units somewhere else in the city. I’m on about the buildings across the water not the people.

Those house across the water are a balls. They should be all demolished and replaced with 8 story apartments or something imaginative.

why do those apartments stick up like that at the corner ? It should be all that height.. or one height.. it looks daft.

The rest of the design looks bland boring and needs to go back to the drawing board. An arch like the one in Milan would be a great idea for the new street.

i agree, the graphics are absolutely appauling but we can defintley start work on relocating the port in the next few years.

They should get the ball rolling on this PD idea. Simply by putting a cap on the expansion of Dublin port, appointing a committe looking into how to best most all the stuff from the port to other ports around the country and someone to draw up a masterplan for the entire docks.

What they did with the Quays was less than inspiring. I hope they dont repeat the same mistake.

Speaking of highrises, has anyone come across this image?

Thats just one of those Mickey Mouse drawings. Its scale is bigger then that. Also incidentally the tower drawn there dosnt look like the other images ive seen. For a 30 storey tower it would have to be of decent scale. Nothing compared to the 50 storey tower seeking permission around the digital hub though:D

I hope it is just that !! With it being so far out from the city they could have really done something really inspiring and high rise. I just hope its not as bland and boring as the rest of the Quays.

I It would look absolutely amazing if the bowl was completed, the capacity would be around 90,000 then i think, they could also maintain a standing terrace on the lower tier with the upper tiers reserved for seating, this is whats done in many german stadia such as the westfalenstadion in dortmund, the waldstadion in frankfurt and the allianz arena in munich, all with great success.

Also does anyone else think the new landsdowne road has been ruined somewhat with that single tiered section, like croke park its going to look somewhat imbalanced!

Yes and Yes. They should move the railway line, complete Hill 16 properly and then put a seated tier above it. Once they have that done they can add a roof.

Down one end of landsdowne road is going to be incredibly quite. It should have a second tier by right.

Croke park doesnt look 1/2 finished to be honest. The should move the railway track and complete the stadium.

Im disapointed. We could have done with a proper stadium in Dublin. I just hope the government will now press ahead and build a 30,000 seater stadium in Cork and Galway for soccer. With 4 stadia and one in the north maybe we could host the European Championships
