That sign is absolutely disgusting. What are signs for? To tell you where you are. What language do the vast majority of people (residents and tourists) speak or understand? English. As if the council’s inconsistent approach to signage – signs on some streets, with others you might as well just guess – wasn’t crap enough. I have nothing against Irish appearing on signs in equal font size. Though I have always wondered why it has to be first. I do not speak Irish, nor to most of the people I know. I do love Irish, but again I do not speak it. This, I would go as far to say, is probably fairly typical of most Irish people.

As always upon seeing how much Georgian stock was demolished, I feel physically ill. Jesus Christ, they really flattened the place. Imagine those terraces even moderately restored. What a different place it would be, Shudder.

Eek! While I’m not a fan of either, the U2 tower is at least vaguely contextual. The Clarence is just horrid. Horrid I say!

“love that second image. Sure aren’t tourists always goin on about them cool lights that whizz along the street like some luminous eels at that junction. That’s exactly what the street would look like with the proposal in place.”

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! So true. The portrayal of those eel lights is very realistic. They enhance our dull streets and make even unattractive proposals look amazing. Thank God for our collective visual disturbances and migraine auras. PHEW!

I too get off at Blackrock – curse those victorians for not designing with the 21st century commuter in mind (the minor irratant of the queue is nothing compared to when the trains fail/some tit crashes into a level crossing)

But I assume (hope) that pedestrian flows will be taken into account when designing the metro stations

Indeed. Any curse on the Victorians is fine by me. Pox on them and their restrictive dress/inability to future plan. ๐Ÿ™‚

I get the Dart every day and it isn’t the built environment of the station that affects users but rather whether the train works or not.

Ask the person who is using the Dart or the Luas and they’ll be more concerned about the quality of service the same will apply to the Metro. If it was proposed to spend รขโ€šยฌ1.125 billion on a metro station (same as St Pancras)I would question the sanity of those involved.

In terms of design I’d like to see something which is well laid out for making the metro experience quick, comfortable and safe. All this talk of ‘Grand Central’ is rubbish (never trust a minister – they don’t think before the mouth is engaged). Keep it simple and you can have beauty in function.

And ignore those fucking renders – jesus you’d think it was set in stone at this stage

I use the DART every day. It is usually on time, but the queue to get out the door at Blackrock station is INSANE. Often means I am late.

Methinks it needs to go to 180m.

    Methinks it will.

I paid a visit to Belfast recently, and one really has the impression that Belfast is a larger city than Dublin.
How come Belfast has a much more interesting skyline than Dublin. Why is Dublin so bland compared to other cities of similar size such as Liverpool and Manchester (although Greater Manchester claims a population of 3.5 million)?

probably because they have more taller buildings in belfast giving it the appearance of being larger. I agree though belfast does look bigger then dublin even glasgow looks a lot bigger and its simply because of the number of high rise buildings in both cities.

Belfast doesn’t seem larger. It is a Victorian city – it is bulkier alright. But it ‘feels’ smaller to me every time I go. Less busy, fewer people, slower pace.

Ehh, are we talking about the same Belfast?

It in no way seems bigger than Dublin.

I love Belfast – very handsome city, but the whole thing about it is that it’s TINY.

There is an argument Cork people use. It is somewhat like the one used by creationists against evolution.

It goes a little like this:

Dublin is crap, therefore by default Cork is great. QED.

    No joy folks, I’m afraid.

I agree. I used to live on Kevin Street, Cuffe Street is almost, dare I say, nice sometimes. The trees give it a modicum of order – gladly robbing it of that wild-west openess that treeless, flat-ridden Dub streets often have.
