Thanks for that Praxiteles and Phil.
Will have a good look at those
Does anyone know of more of such projects in Ireland?
damnedarchitectParticipantI have to say I’m glad the statue of is gone. I was terrified it would be put back.
I don’t like religious iconography getting such a prominent place. Now I know this might be a bit secular humanist/pig headed but I don’t religion ‘shoved down my throat’.
Disclaimer: I couldn’t come up with a better phrase – Christains are of course entitled to their statues etc etc – but it’s such a public place.
damnedarchitectParticipantI agree – though I can’t decide whether I like it or hate it.
Anyone know who the architect and developer are?

damnedarchitectParticipantIs Eglinton Street definitely going ahead? There is nothing on the Wilson website http://www.wilsonarchitecture.ie
damnedarchitectParticipantThanks for that. Must go and get it.

I find it strange that people oppose high rise buildings when we’ve had the equivalent of two 70 story buildings over 200 metres tall in Ringsend which are visible outside of Dublin in neighboring counties. The “chimney stacks” are not exactly attractive yet they are there!!! If we can have the equivalent of 70 story towers over a fifth of a kilometre tall in the city, why can’t we have some inhabited buidlings???
Absolutely. It’s just typical Ireland: ‘Ah sure they’ve done their time, we’re used to them’.
We should think in absolute terms . There are two massive ugly pipes sticking out of the poolbeg peninsula.
What’s wrong with a well designed, and dare I say, groundbreaking tall building?damnedarchitectParticipantAlso the heuston gate tower. When is that due to get underway? That area is about to undergo massive regeneration. Eircom are to be the first tennants in the new 9 storey westgate development opposite heuston. Hopefully these two developements will compliment each other however I have concerns about the architecture of the heuston gate tower. It dosnt look like particularly exciting architecture. I certainly hope its not Hawkins house round 2 stuff:eek: Cheers[/QUOTE]
I think that one will be done in 2011. Does anyone else think this is a very long time? I know the context is very different, but (and im sure this is a very sophomoric arch. factoid) The Empire State was built in a year.
Why does it take us 5?I think you’re right about the design – it’s like some vaguely exciting London borough re-dev project in the late eighties.
Not bad. Not great.
damnedarchitectParticipantA building height and land-use master-plan be drawn up for the lands around Dublin Bay in partnership with the communities, general public and users of the Bay.
Does this include the port?
Also, will the building height masterplan mean that the port – if it is to be moved and redeveloped – will go down the spencer dock route? i.e: Low-rent suburban business park architecture in the city
damnedarchitectParticipantWhat a beautiful building…victorian ?

Is that the Edwin Lutyens one? I think that is in Ireland and the New Architecture 1900 to 1940 by Sean Rothery, but I don’t have it to hand to make sure that is where I saw it. If it is not in that it could be in Reinventing Modern Dublin by Yvonne Whelan. I am also pretty sure I have seen it on line somewhere, and thought it was on this site.
Would anyone know where a layperson would get hold of these books?
damnedarchitectParticipantYeah it was Lutyens. Project went under when Lane went under with the Lusitania. I think it sounded great.
