has anybody seen the plans for the Art gallery with was to be built spanning across the Liffey. An incredible looking thing. I saw a picture of it in the Freemans Journal June 1913 while doing some other research. I expected to see it in the “unbuilt” section of the website.

Is that the Edwin Lutyens one? I think that is in Ireland and the New Architecture 1900 to 1940 by Sean Rothery, but I don’t have it to hand to make sure that is where I saw it. If it is not in that it could be in Reinventing Modern Dublin by Yvonne Whelan. I am also pretty sure I have seen it on line somewhere, and thought it was on this site.

Yeah it was Lutyens. Project went under when Lane went under with the Lusitania. I think it sounded great.

It did look great , but the gallery was to replace the haypenny bridge. People disliked the bridge at the time ,as it was made of metal . A bit the spike , or the eiffel tower !

Would anyone know where a layperson would get hold of these books?

Hodges Figgis on Dawson Street

Yes. They’ve always been good, but are even better of late. What once was a small bookshelf on Irish architecture and built environment has gradually enveloped that whole corner over the past two years.
Their Dublin section is also expanding. -

Both of them are available in the new bookshop in the Hugh Lane too if you happen to be Northside.
Pretty good on the Architects monographs as well. -

Indeed the original sketches, and some watercolours too I think, of this proposal and that for the Gallery of Modern Art in St. Stephen’s Green are on display in the Hugh Lane itself. They’re in the first right-hand ante-room of the central gallery axis.

Frederick O’ Dwyer’s “Lost Dublin”, (Gill & Macmillan published 1981,82,85)) has a full A4 page devoted to it on p142 also showing 1 drawing. Lost Dub is probably available in Ilac or Pearse St Libraries – hope this helps! H.

One here if you’re interested but you’ll pay dearly for it. A nice piece of work. Incidentally, I went along to an IGS talk FO’D was delivering earlier this year with the intention of thanking him for the pleasure the book had brought me and to request a signature but he wasn’t really up for it which was disapointing. 🙁
