speaking as someone who was part of the ‘dumping’ of folks from Ballymun flats to Fettercairn in ’82 I can only agree. Half of Balbutcher Lane Flats ended up in Fettercairn and the community continued for a while but ultimately was so neglected it’s hard not to get angry.

When you see Civic planning like the nice facilities housed around the immediate Square Shopping Centre area. (now including hotels, decent bars, library, theatre etc.) and then look at Fettercairn, just around the corner it is clear that all the effort has been put into small land areas for civic ameniaties and nothing into the housing estates themselves. I mean jesus, they won’t even put down a speed ramp on our road (Kilmartin), despite it being a nightly racetrack for stolen cars.

20 years later, it has just occured to me, it has received no immediate attention whatsoever, apart from the Vigilante activities that cleaned it up about 8 years ago.

What is the point in having all these nice facilities up by The Square when half of the folks living there are too afraid to walk to them. The thought of my mother having to grow old out there by herself absolutely kills me.

the only good thing about living there is that Politicians are too scared to knock on your door canvasing. [ ]

hear hear Paul. fair play to you for doing what you do, many would have given up the ghost with such prolonged adversity. for what it’s worth, i haven’t seen a more professional and content savvy one-man-show site.

Fire breaks out at Dublin city scrapyard

By Kilan Doyle Last updated: 04-04-02, 13:55

Five fire crews are tackling a fire at a scrapyard on the docks in Dublin city centre today.

A fire broke out in the yard of Hammond Lane Metal Co on the Pigeon House Road at lunchtime. The fire services said the fire is not serious and no buildings are in danger.

An ireland.com reporter said the smoke is billowing from the fire that is burning close to a building behind the yard.

Mr Kilian Doyle said: “Cars in the yard are on fire, and four cranes are helping in the operation to put it out”. He said gardaí have sealed off the area and are warning the public of a risk of an explosion.

“The fire has caused a lot of smoke but no premises, industrial, commercial or private, are at risk. Nobody has been injured,” a spokesman for the fire services said.

i dunno but Mr C. J Walsh was pretty pissed about it back in 1999. http://www.sustainable-design.ie/arch/doelg.htm

i would have thought that house was valued (at least partially) by square footage so if you are getting 3% less then I would imagine the value will have dropped somewhat.

Great exhibition, very illustrative with the models and has a good balance of architecture/furniture/interior design.

    well done to all concerned

those skylights will play havoc with the paper in the summer. paper can expand by up to 4mm’s with direct sunlight and will give the operator on that folding machine in the foreground endless amounts of peoblems in the summer.

    sorry, bookbinder pedant

From John Burns, runs the Irish Curling Association, currently based in Scotland

The Olympic Gold Medal has changed everyone’s vision of curling. Dundonald International Ice Bowl has now offered us ice time in September and thereafter and we will be basing a Development Officer there for two months. We would be delighted to have a party up from Dublin for the day then, and hope they would later be prime movers in curling at Abbotstown when that facility opens.
I’ll keep your name on file and contact you nearer September- if you can be patient till then! Best wishes- John Burns

hopefully the recent ice hockey and curling focus will revitalise the ‘peripheral’ activities the BB promised.

anyone interested in the curling trip to Dundonald leave your name with the barman
