What buildings or other artchitecture / planning manifestations in Dublin City do you passionately wish were never built?
    .

Hawkins House, The Irish Life Mall (the one on Talbot St), Canada House, Hainault House, the new Rhatigan apartment development on Golden Lane/Chancery St would be some suggestions off the top of my head.

Saw in one of the recent Sunday’s that Gerry Barrett is eyeing up the development at Grand Canal Square – what does that mean for the landscaping or the design of the buildings around it? If he acquires the scheme will they be changed or remain the same?

It’s not happening as far as I know. Deal fell out of bed before that story was written

kite, as Frinailla are being taken to An Bord Pleanala they are shanghied for the duration anyway. They have little to lose, and a lot to gain, by attempting to get their abducted floor back.

More power to them sez me, they put a nice plan together in Dennehys Cross.:)

They might also get the levies reduced, standard practice if you’ve been granted permission for a development and it’s appealed to ABP

I am in the process of buying a duplex unit on the swords road, I have been told by my mortgage company to get a snag list done on my property for my own good. My question is how much should I pay for a snag list & what questions should I ask to get someone who is qualified to do such a snag lists!!

It’s usually between e200 and e250 plus Vat. myhome.ie has a list of them I think and you can just ring around.

Patrick St elevation. Lex, posted opinion on previous page. I like it but would prefer if the grey of the shell had been continued where the copper is. Don’t have any issues with scale.

And whats all this I hear on the radio that its a 450 million euro development??!! Exaggerration much? It makes for nice sensationalism but a scheme of this make-up with a 450 million euro value would be unviable. I think a more conservative 100 million euro…maybe 150 million as lex said would be a bit more realistic.

I think that’s the completion value if it was to be sold off as an investment after completion.

I’m quite excited about the netting come off this apartment block, it seems to be one of the highest and biggest street fronting apartment blocks in the city, about 9-10 stories and quite a long stretch of the street. Living nearby i understand the street is full of rubbish but i’m really beginning to like the street, its one of the only uniformly semi highrise streets in the city.

That’s being done by South Dublin Construction (if memory serves). British Land and ILIM sold them that part of the street. Silly decision I think, particularly given Joe O’Reilly bought out British Land soon afterwards

Planning for Academy St is going in tomorrow. I’ve seen the images – It’s lots of glass to the Emmet Place elevation. i’m sure people will have concerns over scaling but I like it. The changes to Faulkners Lane will be positive. There’s a stacked shell type structure planned for the Academy Street, Emmet St end.

Having said that, I think the copper cladding doesn’t look great on the Academy St element. Might have been better to continue the grey of the shell down to that level.

At least the locals will be able to furnish their houses at a reasonable price and with some modern designs that do not emanate from the house of St. Bernards for a change. This has to be a welcome development shared by those in the lower income bracket.

I know at least two people worth well over e1 million who make regular trips to Ikea in Glasgow to buy things. It’s not just locals and those in the lower income bracket who shop there. People will travel from all over the country to shop there because Irish furniture prices are a rip off. The lobby groups against Ikea used the argument that prices hadn’t increased as much as the CPI, despite the fact that price deflation is the norm in the furniture industry!!

The problem with a boyle’s comment is that he’s talking about catering for existing population. If a metro is built then it is likely there will be high density developments built around it, thus making it feasible in the long term. It’s interesting to see the amount of posters bemoaning the lack of a southside link. I think that it’s being built this way because a) the airport route is the logical first line to be built, others can be done afterwards (and I agree with the Knocklyon/Firhouse suggestions b) the Luas line to Ballymun was dropped and the metro is the alternative that has to be used by the Govt to keep voters there happy

Wern’t they going for 23 storeys at first? As far as l remember it was taken down in height not because a high building was deemed innapropriate for the area but because the chimney was already the established landmark of Smithfield and it would have been taller than that.

Not sure whether it was 23 storeys or not but yeah, it was turned down because it would have detracted from the tower. There’s a story that’s related to the tower and other side of the square in The Sunday Business Post on Sunday

my contacts in the building trade tell me that those 2 parcels of land up by the airport went on sale yesterday – one of those parcels is residential so they will be the only houses right next to the main road – a solr bought the land in trust but if anyone hears who bought it out of curiousity, let us know

PS – as per the Examiner a Dublin estate agent bought the parcel of land zoned light industrial and the residential parcel buyer again as per The Examiner is rumoured to be O Brien O FLynn

The Dublin estate agent acts for Gerry Barrett a lot. Bought that site on the outer relief road in Waterford for him. Could be him again.

They had to buy the land that forms the curvy bit of H&M off the Council. Could be the council didn’t want to sell more (although I think that’s unlikely). The Dunnes stuff above is correct. They’re closing the one at the Moore Street end and that will be redeveloped into four or five double height retail units. The library is probably moving out too.
