It looks great. Perhaps a small bit corporate with all the glass. Still, its an intriguing shape in its location. A nice addition to the city.

I wonder instead of using PVC sheets, could they nick some of that glass tensile roof from the Olympic Park and bring it with them to the Milk Market.

This structure really is breathtaking isn’t it? I hope they get it right in the milk market – it could be a really amazing addition to the city.

This is gonna be a seriously interesting decision actually. It’ll be very interesing to see how most of the entrants approach it too.

Just passed across O Connell Bridge last night – was a beautiful evening – and the view towards the conference centre looks great. The barrel was glistening in the evening sun and its a another real civic addition to the quays.

Pity about the hotel though. It looked like an elegant proposal.

Absolutely. I’ve always liked this building – streamlined and elegant (apron panels aside).

Which is why it’s disappointing to say, having passed yesterday, all of the polished cladding has already been ripped off. The above is the last ever photograph taken of that design 🙁

Was there a fire in this building last Tuesday? I was walking down Nassau St and saw the street blocked off with two engines and a ladder extended to this building or its neighbour. Maybe that damaged it?

Its strange that they blame the horse fair. Cities need those kind of events to maintain some life and character.

Yep totally agree. And its a real shame to see so much talent, which has been developed over the last 10-20 years in this country begin to drift away.

I’d say we’ll see some very skilled Irish architects making names abroad in the next few years. Hopefully some of those left can do the same.

Surely someone from the city council will stroll up O’ Connell St and have a conniption when they see this. For gods sake. This is the country’s main street, not funderland.

God i can’t believe i’ve never noticed that before – like you said – its easy to see how the profession can make so many vehemently opposed to any modernist/ new interventions.

    An absolute disgrace.

I very much doubt they’ll need the space anymore. 🙁

Jaysus thats dire. Just the kind of thing that’ll get planning on economic grounds and we’ll regret so badly down the line.

Actually looking at it now it looks like a blatant shot at seeing how many floors the council will lop off.

Definitely the original – the additional height allowed the Foster proposal could have made this economically viable and a really elegant addition to the skyline.

Not sure about the lower portion to the left in that image though.

ha ha! Was accidental actually! I was looking at the Elysian thread and someone called the tower ugly – said I’d have a look on Flickr to make up my mind and what came up first…?!

was back in dublin for the weekend. like how the new convention center is coming along. also went and checked out the point development. had read on this thread that the tower element had ground to a halt recently but it certainly didn’t appear that way. a lack of construction workers onsite but it was the weekend. looked as if the lift shafts were a few floors above ground level.

That photo is actually tagged on Flickr as being from the site of the Elysian Tower in Cork!

Well if you’re taking all of Dublin as a wider context then surely a precedent for major, monumental public buildings strung along the river does exist.

I think any perceived reference to context is coincidental, and highly dubious. Your reading too much into it now. The NCC was designed long before the Scots yoke, and I dare say entirely oblivioius to anything within a 100 mile radius, and while I’m not a Scots fan, riverside 1 is infinitely more sophisticated. I know I sound like a broken record now, and a few people are probably getting a little bit pissed off now, but this thing really is awful…

I completely respect your opinion as to not liking it but you can’t seriously suggest that an architect of the calibre of Kevin Roche is entirely ignorant of context, both local and from an architectural history standpoint.

Gunter put it better than I could:
