I am new to these forums (though not others) but recently have found myself addicted!..I find the development of my city (Dublin) past and present an increasingly enjoyable topic of conversation..and just want to raise a few observations about future developments!
I get the train every morning to work in the Docks and would like to know if there are any updates on the following:
1. re thread https://archiseek.com/content/showthread.php?t=673 dating back a long time, I haven’t seen much development of Tara St. train station, just temporary walls warning about temporary surfaces..will the plan as discussed in the above thread ever see the light of day? or any improvement to that station? It looks awful.
2. Also Connolly Station, the broken barbed wire and generally 3rd World condition of some of the views of what can be seen from platform 7..apart from Bord Gais building parts of Amiens St/Connolly. really needs to be developed.
3. The Bolands Flour Mills grey facade – I know the entire Mill has been bought for around €42 Million..and plans forthcoming about this redevelopment?
4. I read some time ago that Pearse St. was due a facelift – any news? I thought that Luas plan B would have been a perfect route to encompass this development and take tourists to the National Gallery/Museum – looks like Plan A will be the winner, unfortunately.
5. Lastly I am a fan of high rise building, but only in a dedicated district – the Docks would have been perfect. I think Dublin should aim for a San Francisco-eqsue Bay Area skyline, and TransAmerican Pyramid-style landmark building, complete with Goodyear Blimp and information screen a la Blade Runner! BTW what happened to that tourist balloon that was muted for Temple Bar..?
Anyway in future I plan to post pics and will try and dig up whatever I can to add to the forums, so indulge me these queries this time! 🙂

Just a few signs around it at the moment asking people not to park there any more because they say that they are starting work on it. It seems that they are clearing it out at present, but I have not seen any planning application as of yet.

The whole of Barrow st. is undergoing a lot of change, I used to live in one of the small houses on Gordon St. years ago – are they protected? When the Gasometer opens there’ll be a huge influx of people in the area. Not impressed with some of the road patches on Barrow St., looks like tar was just thrown willy nilly in the general direction of the road! BYW there is a small burnt out warehouse or something beside the Grand Canal Dock train station, Prime real estate. Still there burnt out that for years now. Things happen very slowly in this city.

I think they have applied for permission, but dont really know the status of it at present. I would say that the road will be completely resurfaced once the major buildings are finished.

The Krann building? Couldn’t find anything on Google – any more details on it?
Looking at some old posts it becomes clear that some many developments remain up in the air, even posts 5 or 6 years old – Liberty Hall, Tara St., Talbot St. ..the longing for skyscrapers. Still little seems to be done to showcase Dublin as a modern thinking city, apart from the Luas and Spire. Is the U2 Tower settled on 100 metres or 78 metres? Lot of confusion there. -

CRANN in some complicated way it stands for Centre for Understanding NanoTechnology, it includes a vibration free nanosurface lab, which is why it is located near the dart line. Also in the building will be a sports centre, a science gallery, which will be a drop in display centre for science outreach, a general purpose auditorium and, I think, a number of apartments for visitors to crann. Wow! Now that is impressive!
It’s going to completely alter this part of the city, making Pease Street into a street again rather than falling away into the nothing that it is now in that area. The building very deftly manoeuvres the site – surprising how close it can get to the line.
How long has this site been vacant – were the pre-Loop Line houses facing Pearse St demolished in the 1890s or in the 1960s/70s?The Ambassador across the road is just nearing completion too with that monster-sized building tacked on to the rear.

well they have a collaborative link to the City University of Newcastle on Tyne, ok sorry, enough, I’ve been making that Centre for Understanding etc joke around college for a year now and nobody has ever noticed which is probably just as well.
Mixed feelings about the ambassador – the front looks good but need they have gone so far with big box behind it. CRANN is going to be good, and the engineering is pretty cool I think because it needs to be vibration free despite the location. The college says it will take this opportunity to open up the campus at this end, proper enterance, more established walking route to the nassau street entrance etc, also, a big push to get people to look at the “gene therapy, can we make monsters in our kitchens?” style displays intended for the Science Gallery. I just hope the Council stops us demolisting those shops on pearse street, my impression was that they were.

There will be no commerical frontage, just a glass wall revealing open exhibition and circulation space. There will be a new pedestrian entrance to the campus on Pearse Street – positioned at that point in the rendered image where the glass skin breaks. This entrance will become the main entrance for this end of the campus. To the left, looking from the Academy, will be the swimming pool, to the right will be the CRANN research centre.

Its funny travelling through the city today with all these developments, theres a real feeling that the city is in a process of transition, but my impatience is wearing thin at Tara St. and its ‘temporary’ plywood hoardings. Spencer Dock station will be fully built by the time Tara St. is finished! And am I the only one sick of grafitti? Now on the unfinished paint job at Grand Canal Dock there is grafitti that makes no sense whatsoever.

Certainly sick of Irish/Dublin style tagging anyway,it really is so unimaginative, pointless and destructive. If you’ve been to Berlin you can see how it can actually be quite a thing of beauty.

Ah, I am beginning to see improvements at Tara St. at last.. an incredibly slow rollout, but looking better. Pearse St. could do with a lick of paint though..in fact, why don’t they install large plasma screens in the station or something to help give the station a bit of a modern sheen? Would enable a multitude of advertising to be shown at a quite the pretty penny. Irish Rail seem to be very conservative.

Driving by i couldn’t make it all out but something resembling a plastic covered clock atop a wonderfully ornate arched stand has been erected between the new irish times building and markewicz apartment bloc. looked very interesting, a lovely touch of old world decoration, very parisian i thought,… look at me getting all carried away.
