I agree with you that street furniture is getting out of hand in some areas of the city.
Outside the Washington Pub next door to the Court House as another example.

    CCC regulations state that]

They seem to have “colonised” whole streets at this stage which is making it hard for pedestrians in the narrower streets which have been re-paved recently and are now virtually impassable at peak times.
Surely any licences for outdoor seating must take the width of the lanes / streets into consideration.
I would have thought that 1 table width around the perimeter or front of cafe or restaurant is sufficient as in the Bodega whilst the Newport has a Parisian style annexation of Rory Gallagher place.Tha slalom like nature of walking down French Church Street now is a pity.On a related note it might be a good idea to start pedestrianise Academy Street,Devonshire street and the streets off Emmett Place and the rear of the Savoy which would give that area just off Patrick Street a boost and take pressure off the Hugenot quarter.

Jerry “CSD supporter” Buttimer after 5 Minutes in city council and still wet behind the ears now proposes that Cork City Council withdraw the 10 million funding for Green Bus routes in the city as they do not work.

I almost agree that the funding should be pulled UNTIL someone sits down and drafts a proper Green Route for Buses – i am thinking of the “green route” from frankfield to douglas whereby the bus gets full at grange, the bus then tears down the hill, turns left at grange cross where the existing traffic was squashed into one lane and then the bus joins in the traffic at the end of the hill anyway so what was the point of spending all the money? It was simply road markings that went in AND the bus co STILL ignores the other direction from frankfield which leads directly on to the main artery in to the city and surely could be used as an express route

Yes the No.6 Should run clockwise at a greater frequency as an express through the South Link rather than getting stuck and causing traffic jams in Douglas West.

News around town is that Joe O’Donavan is about to lodge for permission to build a feature building at Wilton Centre. It will be 12 stories high with some retail linking to the existing centre but mostly made up of apartments. Now Jerry “Cllr Buttimer” and the rest of his anti high rise can really get their knickers in a twist, and let the games begin.Hope for Wilton and Bishopstown this get approval.

Heard same from reliable sources a few months ago also which is why he put spanner in works of M&S deal.
As its at a lower ground floor level than the CUH 12 Storeys should not be a design problem with all the existing smaller units being eliminated with an extension of the newer large mall which is at the Tesco end.
Cllr Jerry Buttimer came around to my house a few months ago canvassing – I told him where his “Communities for Sustainable Development” should go.Looking forward to seeing him on the campaign trail next year.

Got to agree with you there.

First and most simple thing to be done

E1.30 for a single ride on one bus route
E1.80 for a ticket that has 1 hours validity on city buses
E2.50 for a ticket that is valid until the end of the day on city buses

It shouldn’t be that hard to sell three different types of ticket on the bus.

There would be ALL out industrial action by the busworkers union membership if changes were even tabled.

I am still praying for later buses and an express bus that would pick up in Douglas,Grange & Frankfield travel quickly down the south link to City centre.

Why do I see far more from the ugly list…

Whatever people say about Victoria Mills, I can’t see beyond the North Main St car park for the worst though.

Agreed and I am amazed that Merchants Quay S.C. is not in there also. You could have filled the poll with O’Callaghan properties awful buildings.

when are the poles on oliver plukett street goint to be removed. except that it was a bad idea to put lights at waist height outside some of the busiest pubs in cork.
before you waste money fitting the lights, take out the poles and stick uplights in the ground. problem solved.

They are there for at least 18 months now.
The ammount of defunct poles and light / sign standards around Cork is seriously high.
This is Cork City Council after all……………….

That’s a pity. I quite liked the curved roof. Now the thing is just gonna look like some warehouse. Not very attractive. As for Habitat, that rumour has been flying around for ages. I think there is one in Galway, so maybe their next move might be Cork. When is the Coal Quay due to be completed?

I heard a that Habitat were meant to be taking the old stone church building in the Coalquay development.
I think that they require at least 20,000sq.ft. About time that they were in the second city but we will have to wait and see.Is it just me but is the Coalquay taking forever to get built ?

For all his faults Mr. Joe Gavin has been absolutely consistent in his drive to provide Cork with a conference centre and has identified the area surrounding Kent Station as his preferred location for same.
I wonder if the developers who expressed an interest in building the centre will be but off the idea by the piecemeal development of Kent?
CIE’s heel dragging on their site has caused nothing but trouble for the Manager and the city, I feel the past history on this site (O’Callaghan / Coveney) is making them slow to commit to redevelopment.

Kents Station is dragging on for years and only goes to show how Cork always loses out to funding, from the new airport to the delayed school of music, decentralisation….roll on the next election.
Mockery of the highest order and only goes to keep up the image of how hard it is to get development in the “second”city for “high rise” i.e.anything over 3 -storeys.Mary Leland writing weekly in the Sunday Independent knocking anything that is happening in the city waffling from her comfy house on about new developments and everybody dhould have an uninterrupted view of St.Finnbars Cathedral.Dublin is to get a 17,500 seat conference / concert centre,Dundalk a 8,000 seat centre.Killarneys hotels are full as the NEC holds 4,500.Our business leaders are weak, our TD’s are moribund and as for our planners………….

I’d imagine they could generate quite a sum of money by putting the old greyhound track on the market. It is disgraceful that nothing has happened at such a prominent site for almost ten years.

Ascon / Rohcon moved on to the site 2 weeks ago AFAIK.
Diggers were working there last Friday.

Could somebody please explain to me what this event has to do with Developments in Cork (the title of the thread)? It would appear to me that it is quite the opposite of development (unless you take the PDA 2000 definition of ‘development’ as including demolition- but that’s stretching that definition a bit). Wouldn’t it belong more properly in the Cork Docklands thread?

    What do you care ?
Since the “Developments in Cork” thread was split up anyway this place has gone to pot.
BTW it is a development in the Docklands area which is a massive future development projects.

When is all of that due to happen. It would make a huge difference. Those f*cking crossroads in the middle of the DC going into the quarry will be the death of people soon enough. It’s ridiculous!
Also read in the Echo the other day that Amgen want to develop a train station at their site in Carrigtohill, so employees won’t have to take their cars to work. It’s a brilliant idea, hope they get permission and Carrigtohill will go from a town with no station to a town with two stations. All in the name of pharmaceutical development of course.

Heard more about that Ryanair airport to be built in (or around) Killeagh. I have just regarded this as rumour now, but where is it that people are hearing it from, because it isn’t the first time I heard it.

Ryanair are an Airline and do not build or manage airports.

And in fact, they are one of the few buildings in the docklands worth retaining – perhaps Odlums and a few individual buildings on Victoria Rd as well – so it makes it all the more important that they aren’t allowed to decay.

Like jdivision, I wonder if entirely devoting it to restaurant/cafe/gallery use is completely viable. Possibly that could be used for the ground floor. The upper floor might be effetively used as an incubator unit for new media and design, which could also give a showcase retail element to the ground floor.

On the subject of the building itself, is the canopy an original feature of the building or a later addition?

AFAIK the canopies are original as you can see the stonework on the northern facade where slots were allowed for the supports which are now missing and would have been similar to the southern elevation.

As for media design – excellent idea but getting the buildings restored and open to the public should be an urgency as they are visibly decaying. With the Elysian and other develpopments in the area it would be a fantastic opportunity as occupiers and office workers would like to get near the water and socialise etc away from the “sterility” of all the new construction in the area.

The Odlums buildings are protected and will be retained with apartments on upper levels as I have seen on a proposal.

Would question the commercial viability of them but would like to see that, would also like to see some apartments in there to ensure animation throughout the week

Saw some sketches a few years ago for a 30 storey tower on that site which were appaliinig.
If the same buildings were in such a great location in Dublin could you imagine them being neglected and awaiting development for so long ?

As for commercial viability a mixed use development of museum, restaurants, cafes & bars in an area which is taking off at the moment anyway.Apartments would require parking.Ban cars and restore the excellent cobbles as a public space.Bars etc would keep it annimated in the evenings.
As ever in Cork all it needs is a bit of imagination but things take SO much longer in Cork which can be frustrating but maybe in the longer term benificial as if some of the schemes that I have seen for that area including the Lower Glanmire Road came to fruition the place would be destroyed.

I assume that this is the bonded warehouse building.

I’m sure it would be worth more as a site for offices than in its current incarnation. But, from the heritage perspective and the need to maintain building variety in the Docklands it needs to be preserved. If it is in so much danger, the city council should consider a CPO on the site.

It would be a waste to the city as offices / commercial development – just imagine those buildings restored and the extensions demolished, original roof and canopies restored, restaurants, cafes’art galleries, exhibitions on there and useable to the public ! Lots of similar projects in Copenhagen and they are a fantastic addition to a city with few visitor attractions like a maritime museum would fit in nicely there.

Great images and its actually on site which is great !
Any news on the Doyles warehouse site fronting the Quays behind the Eglinto St.development.
Ther must be pressure for the petrol station, bathroom and tyre place to move now plus the garda carpark.I’d say they are all waiting for this to be substantially complete as their site must be appreciating rapidly.
That whole area has lots of potential.
