Yes city of Manchester stadium has two tiers that go all the way around the ground in bowl form, and each of the side stands has an extra one.
When this was built for the commonwealth games there was 1 tier at each end. As far as I know after the games they excavated downwards and built a whole new tier around the whole ground.
I dont think there’ll be much scope for enlargement in Lansdowne in this way in the future but you never know.

If you ask me the best bet was a 60-65,000 seater in abbotstown. This could be extended to meet any future needs we would have which cannot be said for Lansdowne.

Also Abbotstown was to facilitate athletics so moveable seats would probably have been provided on order for a track to be used.

Having everything together in 1 sports campus which could,ve been gradually built over the years could, nay I say it, brought the olympics or such here. Why is the cheap way out always picked. The benefit in solid investment is huge

I know there’s no soft money and college cutbacks are an excuse for anything in here now but the GMB could’ve taken higher priority over the old part of the mechanical engineering or old chemistry building for cleaning. I think its odd that all buildings in front area were done but not GMB

speaking of trinity. the college did a great job cleaning most of the old buildings on campus. How come when they did this they never did the Museum building and the GMB? These are probably the 2 nicest buildings on campus and I think deserve to be restored.
Possibly the student residences in Botany Bay could do with a scrub also(outside, as the interiors have recently been renovated and are fantastic)

Gabriel. All the track is down on Harcourt street but there isnt really any work going on at the moment to return the street to normality. What i mean is removing the barriers from the Garda place down and resurfacing the other side of the street to the tracks. Surely after all the bad press this street has gotten a strong push should be made to finish it off

dig the thing and tie up all those hippy tree hugging b******s in some forest. Granted archeological remains need to be preserved and investigated but they shouldn’t be allowed to deprive the city of VITAL infrastructure.

Metro all the way but Luas is a start. The costs of an underground can definitely be justified by the benefits to the economy. if Dublins traffic was halved it would be worth approx 3.5billion to the city each year in increased business etc etc etc

I didnt mean to imply you were a cynic. I received that e-mail too and was referring to the person circulating it, not you personally

This is just more cynics having a go. Without sounding stupid, and by the way I have a sense of humour:

    1. They didnt build fully electrified railway lines to mars
    2. The research and development cost of the whole programme for a mission to mars is a lot more substantial to that of the development of a space vehicle. ie: the spirit.

Nice photograph Gabriel. Cheers!! What kind of speeds can we expect to see on the lines? Are there any points where the units will be at top speed? What speeds are the tests doing at red cow area?

Your statement that we dont do infrastructure is a bit vague. Who is “WE”? If the correct legislation existed and not so much corruption and arsing around in the initial stages then we would very much “do infrastructure”. The engineers and construction workers are excellent here. Give them the money and let them away at it instead of spending the same money talking about things and see what happens. The Port tunnel has given problems to residents etc but look at the scale of it. Look at how the builders, engineers etc will have the whole thing built in about half the time people spent talking about it. If they’d been given the money wasted on so much bolloxing about at the start plus the money spent on the tunnel, they’d have it finished by now along with the airport metro.

Before anyone starts, I’ve been all over europe and know what the infrastructure is like. I’m pointing out that we are capable of doing it too if the initial planning/objections/consultancy etc stages were sorted out

any new updates on the way for your website Gabriel? I’m very keen to see how things are progressing. Could you bring back the photo of the week thing also if you have time? Whats the story with testing etc? When should we see some intensive testing

    Diaspora

I find cycling in Dublin to be fine as long as one is careful and obeys rules of road. Common sense and awareness is all thats required. Been cycling there for 9 years and never had an accident

Its by far the best way to get around Dublin with the shambles of public transport thats available…. Oh Santa bring me a city wide metro

Yea thats good. I only chose the airport metro first because luas line B needs to link with line A as fast as possible. The idea of a free standing line is non sensical.

if they really wanted to invest get both port tunnel boring machines and do both tunnels at the same time 24/7. These proposed tunnels are not incredibly long so get the bloody finger out Bertie and Co..

When luas work on first 2 lines finishes start building the next 2. Then when port tunnel finishes get the boring machines and do metro from airport to join luas lineB at Ranelagh. in the mean time work on Kildare line and later start electrifying Maynooth and Kildare so that when Interconnector is built DART goes from kildare to maynooth via Stephens Green, Docklands etc. Metro should be called DART in my opinion with same train liveries etc to avoid confusion of having so many systems. Then you would have DART, Luas and an outer suburban system.

Really though what DART stands for would make a good name for a city-wide transport system

Build the whole system as outlined in the A Platform For Change document. The benefits to the city would be incredible. INVESTMENT in the future is the key. Dublin losses approx 8billion in its economy each year as a result of congestion. Reduce congestion to 50% of what it is now and this drops to about 5billion. Thats 3billion saved EVERY YEAR to the city’s economy. So If 10 billion is invested think of the rewards for generations to come…….

    AaaaaaaGH…..FRUSTRATION

in the “A Platform For Change” document it can be seen after research that few people would actually want to use of the phoenix park route. The underground interconnector is essential for the city in my view. I am a regular user of the kildare line. I would rather get off at heuston and take the luas than be dragged up to phibsboro and the back of croke park before crawling at a snails pace to get anywhere near connolly. Now if the interconnector was built and St. Stephens green would be an attractive destination for a lot of people. This could be a very good hub for metro luas etc…

Platform 11 have some good ideas but I dont agree with them on certain things. They tell you what you want but in most peoples case this is not what they want. They are obsessed with end destinations such as getting people from kildare into spencer dock or getting peole from the airport to spencer dock via the existing DART. They forget about all the suburbs and communities that are to be served by new DART/metro lines. A public transport system should allow people to navigate a city easily and quickly and should not focus on end points of lines so much…

the new City Of Manchester stadium is fantastic. Maybe somethin along these lines. I know Lansdowne is a great location but I feel with the new aquatic centre in Abbotstown that a new stadium and maybe a 15,000 capacity indoor arena could turn the place into a great place to nurture Irish sport

Rory W… My point was based on peak times. You dont seem too knowledgable on the subject even though you’re a commuter. I’m also a commuter and by just picking a random station on the DART on the irish rail website I found that there are 18 trains from Killester to Connolly between 7:08am and 10:12am.

This amounts to 6trains per hour in this direction. this is a frequency average of 1 every ten minutes.

Now the LUAS advertisement boards state there will be a tram every 5mins at peak time. This means there will be 12 trams per hour. Where you got your 3min frequency I dont know, but its wishful thinking

Now with simple maths this gives the Luas a frequency of twice that of the DART.

Now even going by your assumption that a 6 carriage DART carries 800 people that gives

800×6 = 4800 for the DART over this specific period of time

250×12 = 3000 for the Luas over the same time period.

Also if some people at irish rail got the finger out and introduced some sort of clockface timetable for the DART you could have better service if additional rolling stock was made available.
