while it is great news the Gaelic Grounds are having floodlights installed it makes no sense to install them at the front of the spectators. The great thing about the newly developed parts of the GG is that there are great sightlines from everywhere. A redeveloped Mackey Stand with a single line of corporate boxes at the top and a low cantilevered roof for the rest of the ground would have made this the best stadium in Munster by a long way and surely the second best GAA stadium.

The engineers have made a bad mistake on this and surely should have provided a better solution. They could have taken a look at what was done at the Hill 16 end of Croke Park where a collapsable floodlight mast was installed. This would have surely delighted the residents while it may have been taller when in use it would not be visible the majority of the time as it could be taken down. Take a look at this photo

what do people think about the lower northern end? Would it ever be possible for it to be expanded to match the southern end? This would probably add 10,000 seats to the stadium. If the houses to the immediate north were bought out would they have to be demolished to make room or is there enough space within the site to build upwards?

Sorry about all the questions but I think in the coming years there will be many questions asked about the capacity of Lansdowne Road as it is too small for 6nations rugby in my opinion

Line D is my preference. It would minimise disruption to O’Connell Street and provide a good connection with the Dart closeby at Tara Street. 2 new platforms could be constructed in front of the existing Abbey Theatre and by walking just around the corner to the red line platforms a good connection is possible here too. Then in time the line can be extended on up Marlborough Street or wherever it is to be taken.

I also think maybe after the trams reach here they could travel on to the Point Depot, thus removing the future problem of the red line going in and reversing out of Connolly. This would be achieved by running 2 routes: Sandyford – Point (bypassing Connolly) and Tallaght – Connolly

the canal end is the same length as the cusack. the hogan is 10metres longer than the others. The GAA had more money due to government grant at that stage. The difference in cost is something like 2million for every extra metre out

compares well to the Paris metro system where a “carnet” of 10 tickets cost 10euro. each ticket is valid for 1journey on the metro regardless of distance travelled or how many changes one makes. of course it costs more to go outside the metro area on suburban rail, but obviously we beat them here too with a 10euro single fare to newbridge for example on an infrequent service without a clockface timetable. Paris to Disneyland is probably the same distance but costs 6euro and the service is every 10mins on RER, even if off peak the trains are not very busy.

Did i say Luas compares favourably…………………. The fact that it looks like a per stop based ticketing system is a farce. what we get here is a farce. seems to me like we’re still learning from the stunning British example when we really should be learning from pathetic French and German examples…..

thats all very good in theory. in reality ireland has a tiny population and I just dont see 200,000 dubs moving to Cork if it were to double in size.

Go with the underground rail plans. some of them are excellent suggestions, ie: the irish rail Dart interconnector and the Swords metro(call it Dart for god’s sake!)

It probably didnt take as long to construct each route but its hardly comparable. The utility diversion that had to take place along the lines was quite amazing. Stuff was just thrown under the streets every which way, so this needed to be sorted out. Also they didnt build the likes of Taney Bridge etc when doing theirs!!

where the “derailment” occured was on a ballasted section of track in Ranelagh as far as I know so this wouldn’t be the grooved street running type track. I’d imagine a tram would easily crush any stones or debris in the grooves anyway.

does anybody know what happened to the Luas talk forum on allaboutbuses.com??? havent seen it in a few days.

from where will it be walking pace? Surely not the whole way? Is testing regular around Ranelagh? What kind of speeds are we talking about in testing?

The right job would have been to put the traffic underground in the middle of the street and leave a proper open public plaza in the middle in front og the Gpo etc…

I live close to a the Cork-Dublin mainline in Co Kildare. Trains are constantly passing at speeds up to 100mph(160kmph). I dont feel I should be compensated, nor do I think those close to tramlines should receive extra money because someone chose to provide them with a top class transport system on their doorstep

I dont get how people dont see how the interconnector is a bad idea. It would mean a Dart line running from Maynooth to the city Spencer Dock area, then to Stephens Green and continuing down the Kildare line. Look at what the coastal Dart line has achieved. This second Dart line would be twice as successful as it would serve a MUCH greater part of the city.

I am a regular user of the Kildare line. I do not think the park tunnel would be good. If I knew my train was going to go all the way to Connolly I would still get of in Heuston and get the Luas to the city centre. Connolly is a long way from Grafton st, Stephens green etc etc. I’d still have a bit of a walk even to o’connell street after my longer train journey. It wont solve anything in my view. I agree with some of what Platform11 say but they’re view that everything can be solved with the park tunnel and trying to cram everything into the existing overcrowded Dart network is bullshit.

Look at the RER in Paris. This is comparable to the Dart except they dont try to put everything on the one line. Lines came into the mainline stations(the likes of Heuston and Connolly in Dublin), Then they put these suburban trains into tunnels(interconnector type situation in Dublin) and routed these to places people actually WANT TO GO TO(Stephens Green, Grafton Street, Thomas Street, Christchurch, Docklands etc in Dublin)

The interconnector is about servicing these areas with a Dart system and not about trying to get people from Kildare to Connolly station.

It drives me mad the way people always look at the endpoints of it. Its the same with Luas. Its not just end to end journeys but being able to negotiate your way around a city quickly and easily, even if this means changing from one line to another. People are afraid of large capital investment. It can be afforded and will benefit so much in the long term.

Any updates or photos of the week in the pipeline Gabriel? Also this is off topic but what is the time frame for the bus colour change? Say in 6 months what’ll the situation be? and are new buses being delivered in the new livery this year?

I heard on radio this morning that the mayor is to lay the last piece of track on the current luas project today at connolly? I wonder will he tell them off like he did the o’connell street guys!!!

Also there has been no mention of what will happen when the 2 lines open. Will work commence on the next part of the network, or will the government spend years evaluating it before saying they cant afford more??

What stages are preparations for other line construction at? Planning, design etc…

do they not point you in the direction of the next junction on the route. I thought they did and if you followed the arrow to next junction you’d stay on it. They are far too small though and dont indicate many destinations.

Signposting isnt the best in Dublin. In other continental cities things such as mainline railway stations, and suburbs are heavily signposted. Visitors to Dublin must find it difficult

perhaps Lansdowne can physically accomodate 56,000 people currently but the official capacity is 49,000 give or take a few hundred. safety etc probably is to do with this so in fact an increase of 1000 will happen if they provide for 50,000 people. however it will be 50,000 people in better comfort and conditions than in the current situation

I have no problem with Dublin people. Its just there exists an attitude that everywhere that isnt Dublin is equal to “down the country”!!

This is totally off topic so I shall stop now.

See Brian Kerr in the Herald today is calling for work on Lansdowne to be started as soon as possible. Just want to bring the thread topic back

ah I was takin the piss a bit. I’m from a large town about 45km from Dublin. However so many Dublin people think that life stops when you go beyond the M50 and that everyone is an “inbred culchie” if your not from the city. Like because I’m not from the city its nearly assumed I live on a farm and spend my saturdays servicing my septic tank!!!

Anyway indeed with the completion of luas and the M50 hopefully access to Leopardstown will be better. I’d love to see another racecourse in the city as a big horseracing fan myself.

Dubs show such resentment to those “from the country” but yet things that are in the “country” are classed as in the Dublin area when it suits. Punchestown, along with Naas and the Curragh racecourses are in Kildare, Fairyhouse is in Meath. While they are accessible from Dublin they are not “in the area”. Get over it, Leopardstown is grand
