Participanti find it strange that people would want a lower spike in the first place! nelson’s pillar was also tall and stood where the spike stands now. If nelson’s pillar was also tall why did so many peope objest to the height of the spike? surely replacing a pillar that was tall with a spike should have been accepted by all people. it just goes to show you how narrow minded peploe can actually be. the spike looks so futuristic and modern. it is a very different idea/approach yes but that is what makes it so great.

Participantliberty hall, cork county hall, ballymun flats, hawkins house, apollo house and so on. What idiot designed these buildings anyway? these particular buildings scream filth. they are so dirty looking. the quality and design are also very poor indeed. they were just left to rot away in my opinion. look at the windows in hawkins house for example. i know it’s going to be done up but that should have been done a long time ago. did you know that cuba has nicer skyscrapers than us in some parts. it shocked me! yes it’s poor but atleast they have skyscrapers. hawkins house is especially ugly and so typical of the irish eh! i blame those idiot designers for suggesting that such filth to go up in our city in the first place. if they had only designed these buildings with some style and character in mind. all i can say now is well done lads and thanks ever so much for f**king up our city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ParticipantIn the begining though, were the plans for the spike taller? if so how tall? i must say it is a lovely spike even at it’s current height. it should be there in 100 years…

Participanti heard something the other day which made me laugh. it just goes to show how sad people can be, these people will use any excuse to block a good project. oh well thank god the spike is up. i was so glad to hear the moaners didn’t get their way this time. the spike is here to stay!!! ha ha ha
“oh my goodness, what if the spike fell over and it came in through a shop window”
as if it would!!! they allowed for plenty of movement. i think it can sway up to 2 meters. these people will use any excuse. some of these excuses frighten me! people can be so strange at times. just like the tree huggers on o connell street (if the trees could only talk blah blah blah) freeky…

ParticipantWhat is it about Ireland? Why do they build Liberty Hall for examlpe as well as a few others and then just stop at that? I don’t understand how people could allow such buildings to go up and then complain about the nice, worthwhile projects that are being proposed. The quality of these buildings are very poor (Hawkins House, Apollo House…), so why do people object to tall, new and stylish buildings? Sure George’s Quay Plaza is good but lacks height. I agree that skyscrapers should be located in the right place but why don’t we have any? Is this all Ireland can do? Are we just capable of building flat, ugly buildings? Sir John Rogerson’s Quay is a fantastic idea, I hope they build it and several others like it, in the right area though. We have to protect our famous/important buildings.

ParticipantI was on the DART the other day and couldn’t help notice the state of Liberty Hall. The glass looks all smashed and cracked. From what I can tell it’s the internal coating of the glass that has broken up and this is what gives the glass a broken/cracked look. It is a disgrace. I always thought Liberty Hall looked good from a distance and I now know I was right. Up close it is one the most disgusting looking buildings. I want Liberty Hall to remain in the city but can’t they do it up??? If they changed the glass to a black for examlpe. Toronto in Canada has some fabulous black skyscrapers. Liberty Hall is old yes but it should be maintained. What about self cleaning glass? And do something with the frame of the building so the new glass blends in with it. It could look good if the effort was put in!!!

ParticipantI am just concerned that they could destroy the look of the bridge by amending it. So many things go wrong in this country. I wouldn’t be surprised if they ruined the look of the bridge, but then again maybe they will do a good job. I understand that Ireland does have some very good projects under construction but something always goes wrong. It is so unfair. I just want for a clean and modern city. I want a city to be proud of. There are so many messer’s out there, so many people that just ruin it all for everyone else. I would hate to see spray paint all over the bottom of the spike for example. If they amend the bridge and do a good job of it i’ll be a happy man.

ParticipantIt is very sad that these people have nothing better to do with their time. I can’t understand how people can be so thick in this day and age!!! As a result of people playing with the bridge I am so worried that some a**hole is now going to destroy the look of this new structure. Afterall this is Ireland and in Ireland we haven’t a clue how to do anything right. I’d say stupid looking devices will be put on the bridge as a result of these idiots. If they fall in just leave them be because as far as I am concerned it’s their own fault if they do. Bloody a**holes.

ParticipantI agree. I think these “5 floor” buildings are a disgrace. I hate the thoughts that in 10 years time our city will be full of these boxes. It could easily happen! It is time for change people. People should stand up and object to these boxes that are being built. Afterall guys the moaners complain about skyscrapers! So why not complain about these boxes. I am so ashamed of my city and have lost all hope. I have wished for a high rise city since I was a child, yet the city still looks like it just had a haircut. I have to say lots of people out there want a high rise city. Thank God I am not alone…

ParticipantOh my God!!! I am so tired of everything being done so slowly here in Ireland. When will they ever wake up and smell the roses eh? This delay will only give more time for people to moan and complain about this planned building over the station. They have already said that it will block out the sunlight!!! Oh how terrible it must be to block out the sun in a few streets. You’d sware by the way they all go on that blocking out the sun would kill a person! And by God the complainers are out there! Always trying to spoil it all for everyone else. Not even a care in the world that it is actually the younger generation who will be the ones to live with it instead of them. They should look ahead to the future. Do we want a boring city that remains unchanged or do we want a city that is part of the times? Dublin just seems to be one terribly boring and flat city. Well done lads!!! By the way, I think the trouble over O’ Connell Street is so sad. Who cares about a few trees. Ireland has loads of trees. What a sad excuse to delay the construction of a very worthwhile project. If it has to be done, replace the trees after the street is finished. I would prefer a clean city not a dirty one. The city is in a mess at the moment and has been for as far as I can remember. The nice buildings are all surrounded by ugly ones. For example opposite Hawkin’s House there is a lovely silver building which has an unusual shape. I am surprised it was allowed to be built, it’s lovely. What a pitty it is hidden away from view. There are several parts of Dublin where we could put these tall buildings. What is so bad about high rise???

ParticipantI agree. It is taking far too long for these competition results to be announced. You are right in saying everything moves so slow here in Ireland. It just seems to take forever to get a good project going. Do you agree that Dublin could also do with a tower that has a view for it’s public? I would love to be able to dine in comfort at a hugh height and have a good view of the city. Somewhere that is open everyday and is nice to be in. The Gravity Bar is a joke compared to what other countries have. The view from the spike which we saw on the news was breath-taking! It’s a pitty only a handfull of people actually got to see the real thing, (those lads in the basket). Nelson’s Pillar had a view. It’s just a pitty I wasn’t around at the time. I am sure that a restaurant at 120m+ would do great business!!! I’d certainly go there on a regular basis.

ParticipantI have been following this subject (Tara Street Redevelopment) closely for quite some time now and I must say I can’t wait to see it finally go up. I also must say the plans look great. It sort of reminds me of City Hall in Toronto. It would go well with One George’s Quay Plaza, which are a lovely set of buildings. So just when is it going to go up? I was on the DART the other day so I had a look down on to the Station’s ground level. Is something happening? I saw guys at work down there. I am very interested in seeing how they will manage to fit in such a building. It is a funny shape, yet nice. Build it quickly, get a move on! Dublin is screaming out for high rise!!!
naz78
ParticipantHow silly of me… I go to reply to the people in the other room but I make an error and end up creating a new thread/room altogether. Sorry for the confusion guys. I guess I will get the hang of it sooner or later. I am tired. Oh well!
naz78
ParticipantI agree. I think this 60m limit is so annoying. I was in the city recently and I saw some really nice buildings, it’s just a pitty they are all so low. Some nice tall buildings, prehaps down at those chimneys in the Poolbeg area for example, would go down well I think in the long run. Is it not just an old industrial area anyway? All I ever see in that area is old/dirty bunkers and so on. Then again a nice skyscraper or skyscrapers in the area could destroy the lovely view of the chimneys! Yeah right! Building big could be something to be proud of and something the next generation could also be proud of. I’m sure they would agree. They say that Dublin City is changing. Is it really though? Other countries can do it, so why can’t we? There is plenty of space to accommodate tall buildings in the City of Dublin. I do agree that historical buildings have to be protected but surely there is room for both. It works well in London. Now that is a changing city! They could easily have some nice, tall, stylish and modern buildings in Dublin City. Why are they waiting and for what reason? Build now I say. If I had my way the city would be historical yet modern. So many people object to tall modern buildings in our city. Some of the buildings that have been proposed for this country are fantastic looking. Just choose you area well I say. Just build in the right area and build up, up, up (and stylish)! A building should have character. I’ll finish by saying; “It is time for change. We need a 21st century city to be proud of”.
P.S. Some of the buildings in the City of Dublin are a disgrace and very embarrassing. What must tourists think. Hawkin’s House makes the city look filthy. I can’t wait for this new makeover we all keep hearing about! Do Liberty Hall up too……… Hurry up!
