This is my first thread and also my first time to speak on this site. I was just wondering, does anyone know of the U2 competition results for the 60m tower? I heard that they should be out by now. It is now the 12th June 03. This building is sure to be bulit, isn’t it? I hope it is as it would be nice to see Ireland catching up with it’s European neighbours. As for the Sir John Rogerson’s Quay building, very modern looking, just what we need in the 21st century. I do hope they build it. The question is when though? According to skyscrapers.com it started last year and should be completed by 2004. I don’t know of any building works that started last year on that particular building. What do you guys make of it? Cheers…

Don’t pass any remarks on Skyscrapers.com – frequently they are wrong – in the past they have had building heights wrong which is suposedly their forte…..
The U2 result is due next week though i wouldnt hold my breath… also i wouldnt hold my breath on it being built 😉

Where did this 60m maximum height for almost everything in Dublin come from?
The new tara street station will be just over 60m
Liberty hall is just under 60m and Georges Quay is just under 60 metres tooAccording to the dublin docklands development authority website the new landmark development at the proposed point square was reduced from 100m to, surprise surprise, a maximum height of 60 metres !
Will anything exciting ever be built in Dublin? Anyway, in all liklihood the most boring and conservative U2 building competition entry will probably win

I agree. I think this 60m limit is so annoying. I was in the city recently and I saw some really nice buildings, it’s just a pitty they are all so low. Some nice tall buildings, prehaps down at those chimneys in the Poolbeg area for example, would go down well I think in the long run. Is it not just an old industrial area anyway? All I ever see in that area is old/dirty bunkers and so on. Then again a nice skyscraper or skyscrapers in the area could destroy the lovely view of the chimneys! Yeah right! Building big could be something to be proud of and something the next generation could also be proud of. I’m sure they would agree. They say that Dublin City is changing. Is it really though? Other countries can do it, so why can’t we? There is plenty of space to accommodate tall buildings in the City of Dublin. I do agree that historical buildings have to be protected but surely there is room for both. It works well in London. Now that is a changing city! They could easily have some nice, tall, stylish and modern buildings in Dublin City. Why are they waiting and for what reason? Build now I say. If I had my way the city would be historical yet modern. So many people object to tall modern buildings in our city. Some of the buildings that have been proposed for this country are fantastic looking. Just choose you area well I say. Just build in the right area and build up, up, up (and stylish)! A building should have character. I’ll finish by saying; “It is time for change. We need a 21st century city to be proud of”.
P.S. Some of the buildings in the City of Dublin are a disgrace and very embarrassing. What must tourists think. Hawkin’s House makes the city look filthy. I can’t wait for this new makeover we all keep hearing about! Do Liberty Hall up too……… Hurry up!

How silly of me… I go to reply to the people in the other room but I make an error and end up creating a new thread/room altogether. Sorry for the confusion guys. I guess I will get the hang of it sooner or later. I am tired. Oh well!

Whe the flippin’ heck are the results of the competition being announced? It says in the ddda website that a result would be announced in mid June. We’re kinda past that date now aren’t we? But I guess that this is Ireland and everything takes forever to happen. Get a move on lads!!! Just make your decision !

I agree. It is taking far too long for these competition results to be announced. You are right in saying everything moves so slow here in Ireland. It just seems to take forever to get a good project going. Do you agree that Dublin could also do with a tower that has a view for it’s public? I would love to be able to dine in comfort at a hugh height and have a good view of the city. Somewhere that is open everyday and is nice to be in. The Gravity Bar is a joke compared to what other countries have. The view from the spike which we saw on the news was breath-taking! It’s a pitty only a handfull of people actually got to see the real thing, (those lads in the basket). Nelson’s Pillar had a view. It’s just a pitty I wasn’t around at the time. I am sure that a restaurant at 120m+ would do great business!!! I’d certainly go there on a regular basis.

I know this subject has been bashed around the place alot before, but I was just wondering if the 60 metre height limit applies to this tower? It looks considerably taller in any of the photomontages that I have seen. I must say I like the image of it taken looking up the liffey at dusk. Does anyone know exactly how tall it is?

the afore-bashed skyscrapers.com says it’s 78m… which seems right. There’s no way the full height of the building is 60m – may 60m is the highest habitable part…?

The rules required the ‘shoulder’ of the building not to exceed 60m in height. Roof ‘features’ could exceed this limit by any amount, so long as they contributed to the overall architectural coherence of the scheme.
