ParticipantI’ll say it again…
Does nobody think it odd that the winning team of architects includes the brother-in-law of U2 manager Paul McGuinness…???!!!
cf
ParticipantBurdon Dunne Architects…would that be Felim Dunne, brother-in-law of Paul McGuinness…???
cf
ParticipantI agree, I’d prefer if they spent more time at it and made the right decision then rush at it now.
Less of the begrudgery please…..

ParticipantUpdate on DDDA website today…
“Due to the unprecedented response to the competition with over 500 entries, the assessment process has taken longer than originally anticipated. However, the jury is continuing its work and when it makes its decision, the result will be published and posted here on our website. “

ParticipantAny news on the results…was 9th June the decision date?

ParticipantWhen Bertie is overthrown will the yanks come in and tear down the spike?

ParticipantI walk down Talbot street every morning towards the spike and on when the sun is shining (as it has been for the last two weeks) it still looks fantastic….despite the red light and the wrapping at the base.
When the curved steel catches the sunlight it really is a tower of light and I truly believe it is the beginning of something great for the North Inner City…. don’t let your criticism turn into cynicism 😉

ParticipantSee Shane O’Toole’s article in “Building Material” complete with commentary by Andy Devane…

ParticipantThe whole point of an anonymous competition is to allow architects to compete on their merits rather than their reputation. Maybe there is someone out there better than Gehry!

ParticipantI’m still not convinced about Shop Street, it works very well at the moment.
As for Eyre Square, the current proposals don’t go far enough in my opinion. It seems to be just a cosmetic makeover and doesn’t deal with the problem of lack of definition to the space especially at the upper end. The whole premise seems to be to bring people from the station to the “town centre” as quickly and effortlessly as possible. What should be done is to shift the emphasis of the town centre towards the square.
Eyre square actually consists of two spaces. The green area to the south and the triangular market area to the north. A built edge to the north side of the green would better define both areas and create a stronger feeling of urban space than the disjointed melange that currently exists.
Sorry for going off the topic but it’s a favourite rant of mine.

ParticipantDon’t like the sound of that FIN, 10 storey high enclosed mall running down shop street!!!
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
As for Salthill, Rahoon, Eyre Square etc… sometimes I just despair!

ParticipantFor the full (and sordid) story of the construction of O’Connell Bridge House read Frank McDonald’s “The Destruction of Dublin” pages 34-39.
Some interesting names crop up such as Charlie Haughey, Des Traynor and the Guinness and Mahon Caymon Trust. This is where it all began!

ParticipantWasn’t the original plan to build two O’Connell Bridge houses, the other being on the site of Ballast House?
The original Ballast house was destroyed to make way for the second building but there was a public outcry and it was subsequently rebuilt.
Two O’Connell bridge houses framing the victorian building in the centre would make a great set piece coming down O’Connell Street.cf
ParticipantGalway County Council have produced the following guideline document for one-off rural houses…
