well as a paddy living abroad i am delighted to see this building get the nod….. as for the site and context, i think it is outstanding.
a cluster of towers in the docklands is eventually inevitable but i hope dublin avoids canary wharfitis!!! if the tara st redevelopment gets the go ahead and liberty hall is replaced with a better building then dublin has a chance at achieving a balanced and unique tall building approach and appearance.
a stand alone tower like the hueston project is great and i would have loved to have seen more of the denis o brien proposal on morehampton rd. i am all for a very new approach to the layout and fabric of the city. another great place for a standalone landmark tower would be on the north circular road, near the phoenix park end. there is an office block there from the 70’s /80’s that could be torn down and replaced given the cash!!!
the heuston tower gives definition and weight to this end of dublin and more power to inchicore and beyond. maybe this will help the opw proposal and if all goes well this end of dublin will become, as i believe someone already mentioned, the western garteway to the capital.
a city with tall, hopefully attractive and innovative towers spread around in suitable areas would be a great achievement and we might have a stab at a great international standing regarding urban management. a pipe dream more than a tangible or probable reality but ye gotta dream!!!
dublin until relatively recently has suffered from under investment and a lack of intelligent and coherent urban planning and more importantly execution of said plans. one can only mourn the failure of the widestreets commision to implement abercrombies ideas such as the phoenix mall for instance (reaching from the park to o’conell st) and his plans for a central square in and around what is now the corpo hq with 10 -12 avenues/ boulevards ending there much like the area of the arc de triomphe in paris!!!
    coulda woulda shoulda…..

Did the old railway from passage terminate at Kent or beforehand on the southern quays!?! a couple of years ago i was home and noticed on the ring road to the lee tunnel an old single track rail bridge. i took a look at a map and saw there is still most of the track bed intact. with all this development, you would think someone would realise the potential for trams like luas or light rail (arrow) between the city centre and suburbs.
as for the development being too much too late, i would disagree. its good to see cork changing and i guess the boom is a memory so now it seems its just business and building!!! one thing to consider i guess is traffic and transportation needs to be addressed before cork wakes up to the nightmare that is dublin city traffic!!!
cheers lexington for all the news – other side of the world and i couldnt ask for a better source … slan

any word on whether or not kent station is to be worked on. always figured it would make sense to reopen middleton line on to youghal and given a billion connect waterford to cork and dublin. It would be nice to have an east coast high speed line to dublin and belfast!!!

speaking of new developments, i read that more housing with a town plan has been approved for north city (ireland.com) with train station 8 storey ‘tower’ etc by shannon homes.
any news on whether a similar proposal at pelletstown has been given all clear…

the georgian society does indeed have a valid point of view and without them, who knows what would have been lost.
as far as exciting buildings go, a 30 storey building is still pretty impressive so lets hope it goes ahead!!!

Any news on whether the rejuvenation of the dirty old concrete mess on s.g.g’s st is going ahead, incl. the george, electronics shop, etc. this was proposed years ago but not sure if its going ahead – plans include new walkway into the castle etc. so sounds great but no idea if anything has been done.
hawkins house is also something that could benefit from a reno but apparently lack of cash has scuppered the OPW’s plans. the tower proposed for grand canal basin ‘coolred’ — any news – planning granted and the like or what!!?!!
dont understand people giving out about luas – no surprises about expense, delays and so on … fact is at least its a start!!!
lansdowne rd. next and who knows the port tunnel will be finished at some stage in the next couple years. the future may not be bright but its certainly not as black as it could have been…..

always wondered what the old bridge would have looked like crossing the river bandon on the west cork line…beautiful seting and it must have been a great way to see west cork!!!
all thats left today are the stone abutments…god a few billion and someone could really do the tourist board a favour plus the locals by reopening that line…oh well!!!

i agree with the view that the georgian society should be more concerned with saving whats left of georgian dublin, and not geting in the way of new buildings, which could end up being great additions to the city.
i am all for the idea of towers and focal points around the city and not just centred on the quays. the donnybrok and kilmainham ideas are great but a bit more detail and images would be usefull to tell just how good/bad they are going to be.
any word on whether or not the esb is going to sell their properties on the georgian mile. if anything the georgian society should be concentrating on restoring that vista but thats another story!!!

i grew up in west cork and thats a good example of both good and bad efforts to add to/ destroy the environment. You are caught between a rock and a hard place…wasnt so long ago you coulodn’t throw a stone for hitting a sign saying built with/made possible by etc etc the EU or EEC!!!
now everyone and their dog remotely involved in building or land wants to be a mogul so bungalows and such are all over the place. we do need a conservation wing with a bark and a bite. we need better distribution of the EU money and we need to stop bitching at each other about bogmen vs dubs!!!
its a beautiful place but people litter all over the island…and thats a disgrace

rail investment is obviousily very important but i guess the reality is it is second string to road funding (as always) which is the main problem.
the western rail corridor should be upgraded and reopened and so too should the middleton line. i always thought extending that line on to youghal and waterford and then dublin/belfast would be a great investment for the country. build a new station on the site beside kent station and you would have a rail link from cork to the north via the south east coast. but i guess thats a bridge way too far.
also abercrombie wanted to extend connolly and the line south to the liffey and over to pearse which would have meant an end to the loop line at tara st. the west cork railway too would be great to see reopened as that would be a great asset to the south west. tourists would love it and it would serve the locals who didnt want the original line shut down in the first place. harcourt st all over again!!!
maybe more ppp deals are needed but then we will probably end up with the same shambles enjoyed across the water in britain!!!

initially i had preferred the liebeskind proposal but heneghan peng really grew on me. the national aquarium sounds great and also a major benefit will be public access right down to the water.
i hope it looks as impressive when all is said and done as it appears in the models. plus good to see an irish firm beat out some heavy hitters from overseas!!!
dun laoghaire and dublin in general will definetly benefit from this development

cork is a great city but like a lot of the country has too many old relics from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. bring on the new city hall refurb and the school of music. if it ever dawns on someone a new development at kent station with bus/rail services and access onto the quays would a great move. if the middleton line is ever reopened, it may someday even continue on to youghal and waterford . a new south-east coast line from cork to belfast via dublin i think however is a bridge way way too far…..
by the way is mahon point actually going ahead and what about the sewage and water works in the city. surely those works must be nearly finished and finally what stage is the ballincollig by-pass at!!?!!

i think it is not too bad as it has at least focused a little attention on the area. always thought we could have a mini flat iron building around the corner where the spar is/used to be coming down portobello rd!!!
a pity that the other side of the road is still being left to rot. if the council could do something like cleaning up some of the older buildings and providing a park for the local kids it would be great. dream on i guess…
i love the building on the corner of harcourt rd and it would be nice to see something done with the old wreck down adelaide rd (school of music/ucd) plus always thought the cop shop on harcourt st was a shambles….

thanks for the info…again it is a little annoying to be so far away from home with limited access to news on such developments. cheers diaspora – i am a little less despondent so i wont be ranting about trains and such for a wee while!!!
i still remember the lines outside heuston for taxis at the height of the boom in the late 90’s so i just hope the message may have gotten through to someone and a way out of the mire is being sought.

i still feel a great opportunity could be lost if a three track station is all this site will get. a central location smack in the middle of the city with scope for more growth and an increase in population, it is criminal not to see the potential here.
with all the focus on the quays, this could be the perfect spot for a grand central terminus with links to all services. a metro is essential to the city and so is an interconnector for mainline and metro services. laus/dart extns. bus services, more cycle lanes and pedestrian friendly amenities in the city are a much better long term investment plan than a poxy three track stop 😑

sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. this idea if it happens could be a great addition to the city. all you can do with the spike is look at it but a zeppelin would be a great way to get a birdseye view of dublin. i am no expert but surely it would be a feasile project financially or it wouldnt be on the cards.
every time i come home it is great to just walk around the city and check out any new stuff good or bad. i’d queue up to take off too!!! πŸ˜€

putting the abbey in the grand canal basin area was the idea first mooted by the abbey board but as usual that idea got booted by the govt.
a great focal point for either site as the national theatre could be a fantastic venue if designed and handled properly. one can only dream but a wicked theatre/venue with all the bells and whistles smack in the middle of town would be great to have. we will just have to wait and see i guess as always…
