Is it worth spending €300 Million on reopening it while there is still no rail connection of any kind to Dublin Airport?

      Argument’s for and against:

I go with 50% of your analysis Brian, it seems ridiculous that rail lines in Galway and Limerick pass through suburbs and satellite towns without opening up services. Particularly places such as Orranmore in Galway and Cratloe in Co Clare.

However the strategic rail review did highlight very clearly the rationale behind subsidising rail services where a societal benifit could be proven.

I feel that Cork-Midleton and a Dublin Airport link should be a higher priority than the Athenry to Sligo section. But given the imminent decentralisation and National Spatial Strategy, shouldn’t a new corridor be established?

rail investment is obviousily very important but i guess the reality is it is second string to road funding (as always) which is the main problem.
the western rail corridor should be upgraded and reopened and so too should the middleton line. i always thought extending that line on to youghal and waterford and then dublin/belfast would be a great investment for the country. build a new station on the site beside kent station and you would have a rail link from cork to the north via the south east coast. but i guess thats a bridge way too far.
also abercrombie wanted to extend connolly and the line south to the liffey and over to pearse which would have meant an end to the loop line at tara st. the west cork railway too would be great to see reopened as that would be a great asset to the south west. tourists would love it and it would serve the locals who didnt want the original line shut down in the first place. harcourt st all over again!!!
maybe more ppp deals are needed but then we will probably end up with the same shambles enjoyed across the water in britain!!!
