A couple of new things on the streets of our fair city…

As expected the new development at the corner of Capel St and the Luas line is pants (it is pants isnt it..i’m not just imagining it?) It is so ugly I had to stop and gaze in wonder at how any planner could allow such a lump of shite to be built there. I think it completely ruins the street in a way that maybe the Setanta centre ruined Nassau St. Still the good news story here is that the ‘Luas factor’ is starting to kick in on Capel St with plenty of planning notices up and lots of property on the market. Lets hope a revival of this great street is on the cards.

The small delapidated building on the corner of Essex St and Winetavern St (?) was demolished recently. No sign of the hardware next door selling up….or maybe they have. It will be intyeresting to see what is proposed for this important site. In the context of Temple Bar and the lack of footfall or attraction to the ‘Old City Quarter’ I think a landmark structure is vital to attract people past Parliamnet St.

The Miles Rohe exhibition opened in the OPW offices on St Stephens Green. If your there check out the scale model of Gov Buildings in the foyer. The proposed new building omn Merrion St to replace that nondescript office block can be seen. It looks kind of interesting. Judging from this and the new Roches store and Royal Dublin it would seem that symetry is sooo last year!

I had a wander down to Talbot/James Joyce/ Foley St area. What a change. Things are really starting to come on although the basic shells of buildings are only in place. Still the feel of the streets down there has really been altered.

What is happening on Eden Quay…the ex-Laughter Lounge has been a crater for months now! Why is it taking so long.

Lastly, seems the CC have been giving street furniture a bit of a spruce up lately. Its much needed. No sign of that fountain on South Kings Street working… what a waste of money! Still love my new plaza in front of the GPO. Its a great space isnt it now that the baracades have come down. The new lighting is also going up. It looks like it will match in with Henry St. Roll on phase II.

Any news on whether the rejuvenation of the dirty old concrete mess on s.g.g’s st is going ahead, incl. the george, electronics shop, etc. this was proposed years ago but not sure if its going ahead – plans include new walkway into the castle etc. so sounds great but no idea if anything has been done.
hawkins house is also something that could benefit from a reno but apparently lack of cash has scuppered the OPW’s plans. the tower proposed for grand canal basin ‘coolred’ — any news – planning granted and the like or what!!?!!
dont understand people giving out about luas – no surprises about expense, delays and so on … fact is at least its a start!!!
lansdowne rd. next and who knows the port tunnel will be finished at some stage in the next couple years. the future may not be bright but its certainly not as black as it could have been…..

This is the tower in Grand Canal Basin; construction is due to start this summer I think:

Grand Canal Basin is shaping up to be a THE place in Dublin. BKD’s Treasury development is shaping up nicely – Gallery Qy etc starting to resemble their final designs. The building above will no doubt add greatly.

As for Eden Qy – I’d say digging underground so close to the river presents some engineering problems – there’s probably had to be alot of work on the basement before the upper floors can commence. Either that or the money has gone!

There is nothing really special about it is there, bar it being a welcoming few storeys taller than the rest of the shoeboxes in the surrounding area.

More like Cork County Hall ?

Well Shay Cleary designed this and is also responsible for the County Hall refurb. so the similarities are probably no coincidence.

Hey – forget the outside… TRIPLE ASPECT APARTMENTS!!! I like the sound of that… can I have one please?

      Actually, have a look here:

      http://www.sca.ie

What’s the second building, the seven story one in the slightly unusual location? The image is called “gcqsmall.jpg”, suggesting Grand Canal Quay, but I don’t recognise it.

Its an old water tower I think – beside the Dart Station… very nice…. I have a load of photos of it somewhere….

It is quite nicely done (I am not a big fan of the windows though). What I like best about it is that when you look at it and the building on the other side of the tracks they are in line with each other. It literally looks like they were sliced in two by the railway line.

Is it the Malthouse opposite Esat’s offices?

Think a new bar/bistro just went in the ground floor there.

Anyway that building is at the ooposite corner (same side) as the proposed triple aspect apartment building.

So it’s the building called, wonderfully, “The Tower Building” – has the rebuilding been finished yet?

      Edit – guess it has:

Hmmm – all the tenants seem to be Treasury subsidaries…

speaking of new developments, i read that more housing with a town plan has been approved for north city (ireland.com) with train station 8 storey ‘tower’ etc by shannon homes.
any news on whether a similar proposal at pelletstown has been given all clear…

and a new shopping centre for Dun Laoghaire where the old Shell Garage was, between the Pavillion and Gerges Street Shopping centre has been given the go ahead

It is called ‘Pavillion 2’. Quite an original name eh? 🙂 Maybe it should be called ‘Pavillion 2: The revenge of Pavillion’ 🙂

On a more serious note, it is just shops on the bottom floor isn’t it? I thought it was to have appartments on the top floors. Does anyone know for sure?

Ooh.. new shopping mall. I think I also saw a construction board for a new mall somewhere that looks like the area where this Grand Canal Basin thing is, or maybe I was imagining things.

Can somebody please list all existing malls and shopping areas in the city and all upcoming ones?

I agree with anto, that building in the picture looks like Liberty Hall somewhat. I rarely see Liberty Hall in close up, but I think I saw several windows smashed in, or the window frames were rusty and broken. It looks deserted.

Triple aspect apartments- must feel like floating in mid air!
CG images such as that posted are incredibly vague, they’re always so contrasted and full of shadow – it’s impossible to make out the profile and detail of the proposed building

Liberty Hall could look fantastic if re-clad.

Pretty much every bollard, lampost and railing in the city has been re-painted over the past couple of months – suffice to say carried out right in the middle of the Presidency – some CC official probably first heard there was some do happening in Dublin Castle in mid-Febuary.
The silver columned-lamposts look especially good now, even if some little fecker purposely came along 3 days later on Dawson St and scribbled blue ink on virtualy every post on the street.
And last summer, when all of Grafton St’s were repainted, someone deliberately came along straight away and put floppy disk stickers on most of the lamposts and bollards, resulting in the usual sticky residues.

Someone always says this every year but the city’s looking great now with the leaves appearing on all the trees – the difference it makes is always great to see.

Bulldozer Girl: Are you serious about the list of shopping centres? If so, I would advise you to have a look at UCDs Centre for Retail Studies Web page:

      http://www.ucd.ie/retail

There reports are expensive because they are aimed at organisations as opposed to individuals, but you can see them in Libraries as far as I know
