My favourite of the also rans was the Glass Obelisk, with the centre hollowed in the actual shape of the old Nelson Pillar. This would be light from within also, to give a haunting effect at night – I think this one was the runner up. It certainly was an imaginative idea.

God help anyone who is leaning against it during a storm if it conducts lighting. Surely this cant be the case!!!
Perhaps the lighting will run from the tip (ie above the perforated glass section ) via a rod through the centre of the spire. Does anyone know for definite?

I agree totally with you. Build a stadium similar to the Millenium one at Lansdowne(with retractable roof) – to the maximum possible capacity for that site (probably 60-65K).

What is a ‘State of the art terrace’???? (note terrace NOT stand!)
Sounds like this end will remain uncovered, with no seating. How this will cost 25million is beyond me.

I wouldnt be so negative as Frank McDonald though – he lives next door to the Temple Bar Music centre. He has a gripe and decided to make his views known. Now I do agree with what he is saying but the problems can be rectified if the authorities got off their backsides…
    1. CCTVs are everywhere in Templebar – surely some of the graffiti culprits could be identied.
    2. Graffiti and litter can be removed
    3. Events which attract these undesirables should be banned and they should be made aware the events are canceled because of their behaviour.
But instead Temple Bar Properties and Dublin Corpo ignore the issues.

I think they recognised belatedly that the roof doesnt come out far enough over the Cusack side and the Canal end and they decided to increase the length on the Hogan side by another 8 metres. A pity they didnt think of this originally. But it still looks fine and is a very impressive stadium. I would have preferred the stand to continue right around the entire pitch though.

Actually unless I am mistaken I think one of the stipulations of £50m from JP is that it is used to build a national stadium, owned by the state which doesnt become commercial. So if eircom(for example) were to offer another £50m to call it ‘the eircom stadium’ then Mr McManus’ money would be withdrawn.

Since FF failed to get the overall majority which they were daydreaming about, will the PDs give the stadium the nod?
A compromise looks inevitable – perhaps a 60,000 seat stadium with the rest of the campus postponed.

I think it looks pleasant – I think given that it is a small space, in a heavily urbanised area – there is a need for quite a bit of paving. A lot of grass wouldnt work well in a location like this. It looks contemporary and is open (ie no railings locking it away). Also I dont think the presence of skateboarders is necessarily a bad thing. Diversity is what makes a city interesting.

Regular updates would be great alright JJ.
I was very impressed by the display and it was well worth the effort. I really would not take much notice of the few media cynics who criticise everything which is worthwhile, AND who are completely out of touch with public opinion. From what I can see most people have a great interest in the Luas and its development and cant wait for it to start running. And its on schedule!!!!Well done.

The £1.8m refurbishment project on the city centre landmark, which was built in 1816, started last June and the bridge was set to re-open on December 15. It is unclear whether yesterday’s drama will delay that opening.

    Idiots is right.
A pity they didnt fall in also.
I hope this doesnt affect the schedule too much.

I managed to look at what is going with the bridge yesterday and there seems to be quite a lot of steps leading up to it at each side – this is because the original gradient of the bridge is being reestablished. I wonder though will this work.
They are also putting up the walls (spannig outwards) at each end – similar to the Millenium bridge

Actually the fountain will be moved in the next 10 days and will be moved to the Croppy Memorial on Wolf Tone Quay near Heuston Station.

Actually I notice that they have started some digging near the Garda station on Pearse Street – I am not sure if this is perparatory work for the Anna Liffey Fountain or not though.

just saw this in todays paper…
    Bertie’s train at election platform

THE train that goes nowhere will have Taoiseach Bertie Ahern as a VIP passenger on Sunday.

A 100-metre line is being specially built opposite the Merrion Square entrance to the Dail to promote Luas. But the line and carriage will disappear within 24 hours of the Taoiseach being photographed.

Traffic-snarled Dubliners will have to wait years before they can get into a Luas carriage – and none of the lines will be along Merrion Square.

Opposition deputies last night demanded to know the cost of the ghost Luas line. Eamon Gilmore (Lab) and Olivia Mitchell (FG) compared Sunday’s photo-shoot to the legendary election stunt of 1982 when Ray Burke, then a Fianna Fail minister, arranged for trees and shrubs to be planted for an official housing estate opening during a by-election. They had been hired and were gone the next day.

Ms Mitchell compared the Taoiseach’s Luas promotion to the election gambit of MEP Mark Killilea, who handed out phones for which there were no lines. Mr Gilmore accused the Taoiseach of cynical abuse.

Briiliant!!!! this really needs to be done.
HOWEVER is this going to turn into another O’Connell Street redevelopment and take years to complete (if ever – am I getting cynical? – I hope not)

“the National History Museum hasn’t evolved with time” – surely the present is part of the greater timeline also. The challenge for (great) architects is to surmount challenges like these and achieve the twin objects (in this case) of preserving the original museum and addressing the needs of the museum in terms of space in an inspired fashion, which itself will add to its overall greatness. Extension is not a dirty word.

Who came up with this notion that it is a ‘museum of museums’? who are we fooling? It is a very fine building but lets not exaggerate and I don’t know why extending it is seen as bad news? If the same logic was used with the national Gallery – it would be only 1/3 the size it is today and I have never heard any say that the 2 existing extensions to that building ruined it.
Of course this will have to be done tastefully.
