      Hi,
Can anyone out there please help me out in identifying a work of architecture I briefly saw on TV, but missed out on learning who was the architect that designed it, where it’s located and what’s it’s name?

What I saw on TV was a work of architecture with a design that resembled a human eye when its reflection in the water is viewed together with the building itself. The design of this building was very modern looking and uses a lot of glass. This is all I was able to see on TV, and I would really be grateful if anyone can tell me the name of the architect, the name of the building, where it is located and where on the internet I can find a photo of it, as well as an architectual critique. Many thanks in advance for any help.

      Regards,
      Binar

Was it in a city or the countryside? What country might it have been in? What TV channel was the programme?

If it was in a city on an English channel it might have been the conference centre in Edinburgh, the concert hall in Newcastle or the London Assembly building (all by Fosters). Anyone any other ideas?

just had a look at calatrava’s site(link on previous posting) for any pictures of the Macken Street or Blackhall Place Bridges… the picture of the Macken Steet Bridge looks quite different to pictures posted previously on this and the corpo’s site, with the central pylon or supportive arch in the middle of the bridge, had thought it was to be on the left hand side?, the picture is animated showing how the bridge will open/close, again different to how I assumed it would work…the illustration of the Blackhall place bridge looks pretty much the same, take a look and see what you think…

Incidentally Ireland is not listed on the site, the pictures can be accessed by selecting “UK” from a list of european countries, also the names are mixed up, Macken Street Bridge appears when you select Blackhall Place and vice versa!

Calatrava designed a science museum complex
in Valencia, Spain which looks remarkably
like a human eye. Completed this year
      I think

      THAT’S IT!!!!

Moz and E.Carr thanks a lot for solving my mystery. This is the building I saw on TV and thanks to you guys I now know the following basic information about it:

      L’HEMISFÉRIC Valencia, Spain
CLIENT: Generalitat Valenciana (City of the Arts and Sciences)
ARCHITECT: Santiago Calatrava, Zürich—Santiago Calatrava (principal-in-charge)

This work of architecture has to be the most beautiful I have seen in a while. I’m going to study up on other works by this architect named Santiago Calatrava because I think he is doing work that is over the top.

Lastly, if anyone out there can direct me to a website with a good architectual critigue and a good photo of this building that shows it together with its reflection please e-mail the URL to me at pixeldreamer@hotmail.com or just post it in this thread.

      Thanks in advance.

      Regards,
      Binar

I have to say I’m very disappointed in the new proposal.
it is now very run of the mill.

Yeah, I agree, the original was interesting because of its aysemmetry, its now quite bland.

Maybe it is a mistake…………if you look at the illustrated animation the bridge pivots on a central axis point as seen in one view ….in the other view however it is missing. This is illogical.

similar bridge,if a little more crude in design from 1992 in Portugal (not a swing bridge)

was looking on Calatrava’s site again for some dates to do with that picture, all there is is 1999 – 2001 beside it, so maybe that is the original and the harp like structure is the revised design, seing as the corporation have it posted on their site etc…certainly hope thats the case anyway.

Nice to see how we have rejoined the UK again – thank you Senor Calatrava. Perhaps we shall call you Portugese.

Rory W, sorry but Señor Calatrava is a spanish architect, not portuguese.
