PaulCParticipant
I can confirm that the work being undertaken here is repaving around the green. I passed by yesterday evening and saw that they have a bi-lingual notice up outline what work is to be carried out. In short it is repaving with granite and replacing the existing trees with new ones (4 metres high) – this is necessitated by the presence of a disease.
PaulCParticipantI dont think you are ranting at all – I agree entirely and I think a lot of poeple would be of the same opinion. I think I might write a letter into the Irish Times on this.
PaulCParticipantBeats me also – unless they are realying the footpaths around the Green – I certainly didnt notice any planning application being posted up anywhere.
PaulCParticipantYes it is – I think the pitch at the side of the stadium is used by the Landsdowne Club for training and small club matches.
PaulCParticipantJust look at this arial picture of Landsdowne Road stadium – I think it is quite evident that even an 80,000 seat stadium could be built on the space available here – the stadium would have to be built perpendicular to the present one. It would be a fantastic stadium in the perfect location and with a retractable roof it would proof to be very popular with all sorts of events.

PaulCParticipantGregF – I was thinking the same thing myself yesterday as I watched the cermony. Now if only the Corporation would get a move on with their excellent plan for the street.
I too would certainly support the idea of a military parade – I am sure it would also be a big morale booster for the army.PaulCParticipantGood Point Sean, except Landsdowne Road is in Dublin 4, isnt it?
PaulCParticipantDeepnote – I am not sure if you are correct in saying that there isnt enough room at the Landsdowne site. The IRFU actually had planned to develop it into a 60,000 all seater stadium. However the stadium would have to be turned 90o to make better use of the space available. As at the moment clearly there isnt enough room at each goal end.
Although I do accept your point about disruption to the residence – but then again this can be used against any stadium being built in a city centre location.[This message has been edited by PaulC (edited 08 October 2001).]
PaulCParticipantThat is interesting alright. I wonder was there a PD representative at that meeting.
I think in light of the current downturn the correct way to proceed would be just to build the ‘Stadium Ireland’ element and leave all the other parts of the campus for another day – maybe 3-5 years depending on our financial position then.
However I still dont see why a 60,000 seat statium(maybe even 80,000) cant be built at Landsdowne road (with a retractable roof), this would be a cheaper option and would be very accessible.[This message has been edited by PaulC (edited 04 October 2001).]
PaulCParticipantI was in touch with Dublin Corporation and they tell me that the renovated Ha’penny Bridge is scheduled to reopen at the end of November.
PaulCParticipantActually to answer my own question – I got this from the National Gallery’s website( http://www.nationalgallery.ie ), regarding opening of the extension…
The construction and design of the National Gallery of Ireland’s 4,000 sq m Millennium Wing is now nearing completion. To manage the final critical stages of the project, it will be necessary to close the Gallery to the public for a projected period of two months prior to Christmas, ahead of the opening in January 2002. This period will allow for a re-hang of the collection and an opportunity for the redecoration of the existing galleries.
PaulCParticipantYea – it looks great alright – I cant wait to see it when it finishes.
Has anyone any idea when it is opening?
I would say they will do well have it finished this side of Christmas.PaulCParticipantCould I also suggest new Dublin Corporation offices (not the Sam Stevenson elements).
PaulCParticipantI agree with you Greg. Although I think work is due to start on erecting the new monument in September – this is supposed to be completed early next year. Once that is up work will be carried out on the footpaths.
Although at the same time I would not bet my house on it.[This message has been edited by PaulC (edited 31 August 2001).]
PaulCParticipantHas anyone any idea as to when it is reopening?
PaulCParticipantHas anyone any news on this – Are the ESB going to move from here. It would be great if they did. Of course it would be imperative that the original Georgian buildings be reinstated.
