Not Michael Scott’s house at Sandycove?
-

No, I think the house is more important for being a such a daring design for its time in Ireland rather than for its architectural merit.

Paul I noticed you mentioned the Carrolls building on Grand Parade, pity it was desecrated both inside & out. Shouldnt modernist buildings in Ireland now be protected structures

De Blacam + Meagher’s new Temple Bar Apartments are very good and show timber detailing progression and maturity from Becket Theatre. Deserving of RIAI Award and more. Though a petition should be raised to get the owner who stuck the bloody fire alarm on the front face to remove it. Also why is it so difficult in Dublin and Temple Bar to sit outside with a glass of wine on a hot day?

Could I also suggest new Dublin Corporation offices (not the Sam Stevenson elements).

What about the Department of the Taoiseach, Merrion Square and Liberty Hall…there’s a contrast.
When you try to compile a list however there are not many that are outstanding, are there? Hopefully the 21st century will have substantially more to offer.[This message has been edited by GregF (edited 04 September 2001).]

Goulding House 1975
good choice paul
not the most original building but very worthy
what about the late lamented Archers garage?and Alan, I’m in complete agreement on the sitting outside with a glass of wine-very difficult
but you could try Kelly & Ping in smithfield
the service is very patchy but the food and ambience are very good-the Brazen head is about the only pub in Dublin city centre where it is possible to sit outside (someone please prove me wrong) -

O’Donoghues of Merrion Row has a rear courtyard too but gets packed at weekends in the summer

there are quite a few establishments around the city where one can have a quiet pint outside but they are all mostly just some chairs put out on the street and cordened off using the usual stretched fabric inside a frame there are alot of these places around grafton St-baily,Bruxelles ect.The only pub wuth a beer garden in the city centre is the Temple bar though (well that I can think of).Although on a sunny day around exams especially one is lightly to find a large contingent of bolton St. architecture students at the pav. in trinity on the dutch (-gold)! which has a great atmosphere but not everyone likes sittin on grass and theres not much civilised wine sippin’.
