There’s a picture of the saucer in Frank Mcdonalds book. It’s very funny. It was a joke I hope.

I always thought it would be nice to have a quiet park somewhere, with a forest of pediments with failed competition entry models on top of them – in glass boxes. A sort of limbo for all those ideas and opportuntities – where you could wander, contmplate and think melencholic thoughts…

Here’s one for the limbo park. It’s certaintly not the worst of them but I’m very glad the spike won.

My favourite of the also rans was the Glass Obelisk, with the centre hollowed in the actual shape of the old Nelson Pillar. This would be light from within also, to give a haunting effect at night – I think this one was the runner up. It certainly was an imaginative idea.

ah, agreed and fair enough, but isn’t it strange how such a high profile competition has so few references with pics on the web

It’s handy to focus in on a competition where the building is such an “object”…. there are so many other “might have beens” and “nearly weres” or maybe some “stuck in the pipelines” that could do with some discussion. Like for instance the two competitions held seperately in Kilkenny in 1999 for a civic space and civic offices. These were won – decided upon… what’s going on with them?

How much of a mad rush are you in for them?……………I’ve no computer at the minute and am not sure when it’ll be back……
