Visit this for views of our national stadia and for some reason the one on the South Circular Road has been left of the list.

Poor Scotland, why in God’s name did you seek us out only to be lead up and down the garden path by our Chieftain. This whole sorry saga is most embarrasing to Irish soccer fans and the country in general.

The more European influence on Dublin’s drab bland and flat new architecture the better- looking forward to seeing what the Spanish plans for Dublin’s ‘new’ Markets produce !

Well done Belfast and Tim Husbands (General Manager)…your Waterfront Hall is Number One in Europe……….and Number Two in the world! The Waterfront Hall was recently named runner-up in the International Association of Congress Centres’ (AIPC) World’s Best Congress Centre 2002 – just being pipped by the prestigious Vancover Convention & Exhibition Centre. That makes you Europe’s premier international conference venue! Now plan and redevelop Ravanhill for all of us.

I heard an official from the Corpo giving out about having to spend 70k on tidying up after the Halloween bombfires. Why can’t they organise some fireworks and a street party come concert as was organised by Belfast City Council for children and adults alike around the public space that surrounds the Odyssey Arena. Belfast held a public party for 50,000 and not an ounce of trouble. Derry City also had a great party along the Foyle. The Corpo (DCC) harp on about ‘enhancement of the public realm and soft finishes’ this is a great line often repeated by Jim Barret. We are treated like cattle in this city when it comes to open spaces and facilities / play space for children. Grafton St for instance on a Saturday is pure bedlam too many and too narrow.

All we have is a few commentators on architecture and little or no critism especially on pre planning or even submission stage …why are they so afraid …don’t want to upset the paymasters !!

This is truly shocking……….. I thought and assumed these grounds were no-go…..its ours and not theirs (DUCHAS and OPW) to sell to pay for FFs savings scheme………but as DUCHAS and Dev did not object to the run of the mill office blocks planned for to face the Gaol and other DUCHAS properties on all sides then it appears they would have no problem with a chocolate factory if it were planned to face the Royal Hospital / IMMA …..and on its own grounds !!

Something will emerge from all of this but all too late for the bewildered Scots as UEFA will make there decision by Dec’ 7th. No doubt they already have put this issue to bed and and I don’t expect a shock announcement from UEFA as there is no possibility of contracts (never mind drawings) even been signed drawn up 5 weeks from now…it would still be only one likely Irish venue.

The original philosophy with Ballymun and other such developments was ‘house them high and keep them warm then run away and all will be OK’ and if that does not work feed them on soccer and chips.

These places really come into their own during world cups with balconies plastered with paint and on the ground in the corpo estates – dare you not conform and paint your footpath ala Belfast or one would face exile. Someone remarked ‘one must educate’ but education is a dangerous thing and then what ambitions and awareness might be aroused.

The essential distinction between one of housing and wind-farms is that one of housing (ala bungalow bliss, pick your page) has blighted every field between Dublin / Galway and all other directions. Each one producing its own generally visual intrusiveness, sewage and other waste. Wind-farms are clustered together (unlike the confetti planned Mexican houses) to produce clean energy with no waste products.

This crazy one of housing in every field is so noticeably absent when one drives through Northern Ireland or over in Scotland – why because it’s not allowed and has never been an issue like most things here. The one off housing advocates say they want to protect rural communities where as in fact they will destroy what little is left of rural Ireland .The obvious solution is to build ’village like’ as is only allowed in Scotland and as one sees in the Highlands and in particular around Fortwilliam and the ‘Road to the Isles’, o to be on that bonny road now.

Well Dublin has something to show on the cultural side after 10 years of the Celtic Tiger. Consisting of 3 auditoria and an art gallery. It is part of the DCU complex… not exactly
(capacity 1260) a Waterfront Hall along the Liffey but it will be a impressive development and the largest stage here …designed by Mr Andrezi Wejchert..official opening 16th October.

Heard some locals saying that they will miss their Manhattan style views from their very spacious flats – not much wrong with the blocks themselves (they seem to work in most other countries) its just the fact that they were built then abandoned by the Corporation and never managed. Take Trillock Tower in London and the way it was reborn and transformed for living by good management.

On the new scheme(s) it’s what most local people want and especially families but there was a great chance to do something similar on the lines of what one sees now in modern Amsterdam.

Exactly there should be a Q Mark for architectural quality …far too much critical debate revolves around height..to the extenth that it diverts attention away from the architectural quality of whats proposed….. the legacy of the the last 10 years is just largely the same bland apartment blocks and offices been repeated.. simple to design, build.. also architectural competitions are few and far between.

As has been previously stated the Odyssey Arena in Belfast is the only enclosed sporting facility in Ireland. The Waterfront Hall is truly a ‘national’/ international venue compared to the ‘National exam hall’ on Earslfort Terrace. We only have to look north for guidance and direction when it comes to the realisation of leisure and cultural centres. The big difference is that these projects up North have been funded with the help of substantial Lottery funding. Our Lottery was loudly proclaimed on its much heralded inception as funding for major sport facilities. All that has been funded is mickey mouse projects by the lobbying of local TDs ensuring that local parish pump groups got their bar extensions built on to every GAA and golf club from Malin Head to Mizen Head and no government interest in any grand national plan for Stadia or public leisure centres.
