ParticipantWell Dublin has something to show on the cultural side after 10 years of the Celtic Tiger. Consisting of 3 auditoria and an art gallery. It is part of the DCU complex… not exactly
(capacity 1260) a Waterfront Hall along the Liffey but it will be a impressive development and the largest stage here …designed by Mr Andrezi Wejchert..official opening 16th October.visit http://www.thehelix.ie

ParticipantMethinks the arrival of the full Russian Philharmonic Orchestra will tempt me onto the number 19 bus and over to the self-financing Helix…for if they were to play the NCH they would not have room for their instruments on its so inadequate stage and primitive backstage facilities.

ParticipantGive the theatre a chance – and the 11, 11A, 11B, 13, 13A, 19A pass by the theatre!! No 19 bus in this direction!
And, Paul, I would like to know why you wouldn’t go “out there”. Glasnevin is hardly a distant planet!

KeymasterBecause unlike the majority of Irish people I don’t have a car. I like to see the theatre or concerts as part of a well rounded night out with a city centre meal before hand and perhaps a drink afterwards also in the city centre. Being dependent on buses or taxis to and from Glasnevin kinda migates against this. Venues like the theatre in TCD, the Gaiety, the NCH or Abbey do not have this problem. Incidentally a good friend of mine who is an academic in DCU describes the project as a large “white elephant in waiting”.

ParticipantI also have no car, and last night realised once more that the walk from the Point Theatre to the bus is quite long. Although now punctuated by the completely lit space towers at Georges Quay (sooooo sweeeet).
Helix – saw all the TV promos yesterday. Interesting stairs. Bear in mind that bus users have to get two busses to get the from the south side, and not everybody on the south side automatically has a car.
But seriously – fair play to them for going ahead and actually building it. It sure as hell beats discussing making something for ten years and then doing nothing.

ParticipantI was at the opening night of The Helix last night. What a superb facility – architecturally innovative, acoustically accurate and with less of the cultural snobbery that surrounds the NCH. I agree it could be a white elephant in waiting – but not if people clamber aboard the 19a and support it. (I think DCU will use it as an exam hall etc. in the summer anyway.) They have an interesting broad-ranged programme lined up for the coming months… Whatever about southsiders going to Glasnevin, northsiders should certainly get out and support the best thing that has happened on their side of the city since, well, Smithfield? Fair play to DCU – they’re already contributing more to the cultural life of the city than UCD ever did.

ParticipantReally looking forward to boarding the 19a and attending / viewing the Helix…maybe even Dublin Bus will open their mysterious exit doors on said bus to mark the occasion !!
