Apologies. I’ll refer to them as the pharmaceutially challenged in future

And seriously, I wasn’t being disparaging. I’m curious what you think I should call them.

On topic, I don’t like the way the new building joins with the older stuff on the Amiens St. site. The styles/colours/finishes clash badly.

But they ARE strung out junkies. The solution may be up for discussion but the issue isn’t.

The park on Foley St, at the end of the new Street, is closed for refurbishment. This really has the potential to be a lovely area. It already has a nice mix of activity, from apartments, hotels & hostels, offices, the DCC Gallery & Dance Ireland HQ (everywhere needs a few artsy types) on Foley St. and quite a number of nice independent cafe’s & restaurants. Not to mention the proximity of Connolly Station & Busaras delivering thousands to the area daily. Sadly, as with much of the North Inner City, the number of strung out junkies hanging around the area really spoils it. If that issue can be overcome it has a lot of potential.

“We’re trying to create the equivalent of an Eiffel Tower, the London Eye or the Sydney Opera House – the sort of iconic thing that Dublin currently lacks.”

What he fails to note is that none of these were designed to be ‘iconic’. OK, the OPera House was designed to look good, but the first 2 were in fact built as temporary structures but became iconic and so got to stay.

You just can’t sit down and design something iconic.

This plan is bollox. Crass & tacky.

Further thought – The Eiffel Tower & The London Eye were designed as temporary structures for major events. Maybe we could have a temporary Suas for the Eucharistic Congress in 2012. If Suas becomes iconic it can stay, otherwise it has to come down ๐Ÿ™‚

Metro West might well get axed but I doubt Merto North will.

I suppose the rent was pretty high. Yeah is the Iveagh markets going ahead? I love the Liberties and that would be something great in the area.

Was walking up Francis St yesterday as two English tourists passed in the other direction. Heard them note with disgust the state of the Iveagh Markets and say how it would make a lovely little version of Covent Garden! It ain’t rocket science, is it? And it’s right on the tourist trail already.

On topic, I love those shopfronts. And Jaipur was still open last time I noticed it a couple of weeks ago.

There hasn’t been any mention of the corner of Lwr. Stephen St for a while. Any action due soon on this building? Is the proposal below what was approved (planning app 5827/05 )? I thought Jaipur restaurant might be staying.

My purely personal view is that it would be criminal to remove the Poolbeg stacks.

To me they are the greatest landmark of Dublin. Whether you arrive by air or sea, they are one of the first things you see. Approaching the city, particularly from the south, they again act as a landmark of the city.

Their sentimental value, not just to me, but to huge numbers of Dubliners is enormous.

I don’t think they’re ugly in any way. They’re quite beautiful.

So has the massive portacabin aka the Pier A extension closed? I can tell you I won’t miss it when it’s gone!

And will the flights that used to go from the portacabin now user Pier D?

The Irish Times last August. And the cost of repaying this capital investment would equate to รขโ€šยฌ22 for every trip taken on the line from Swords to St Stephen’s Green.

This number pisses me off. This is an investment over 30 years for a piece of infrastructure that will last for countless decades. The way it’s presented you’t think the Metro was to be closed down in 2040 ๐Ÿ˜ก

Personally I’m in agreement with Frank that the Irish Rail Interconnecter will give a better and faster return but the country (not just the city) needs both if it’s to function into the future.

    Just build them.

Open to correction on this, but that has been replaced by a building occupied by the Permanent TSB. The building was originally built by the Irish Permanent Building Society and named “Edmund Farrell House” after the then CEO’s daddy. I think it was initially to be named Sean Lemass House. There was an outcry over it at the time. Then the Trustee Savings Bank took over the IPBS and rightly dumped the HQ’s name. There was a later and separate row over Edmund Farrell&#8217]

There was a piece in yesterdays SBP about the PTSB HQ. Irish Life intends to move PTSB to its Abbey St complex subject to getting pp for some new development on the Abbey St site. The general Abbey/Talbot St. area is experiencing a bit of a renaissance in the last couple of years.

There seems to be some construction related activity at the NCAD in the last couple of weeks. Both the fire station building (which seems to have been behind hoarding since forever) and the wall beside it. What’s being done?

Selecting route A to link the two luas lines is madness, ramming it through college green is nonsensical, preventing as it will, traffic flow in all directions as it passes through, never mind the aesthetics of the situation. What chance now of re-claiming college green as a plaza or actual green in the future, never mind the mind pulling up o’connell st. again, just after the IAP is complete – whacko.

From an aesthetic point of view I think Luas running by the front of Trinity will be fantastic.

Nor do I have any problem with traffic being diverted away from College Green. City Centre public transport shouldn’t be designed around traffic. Rather, it should be the other way around.

I think Luas will increase the opportunity to reclaim College Green for people rather than traffic.

I’ve read this whole thread and can’t see any reference to the fact that the Airport Metro isn’t actually connected to the airport in 2 of the 3 proposed routes. Dropping passengers off at a nearby hotel doesn’t really count as integrated transport.

Surely they’ll have to opt for the tunnel under the airport and have station at the terminals rather than the GSH.
