Why do we always compare our towns with England… aren’t there any other countries we’d like to compare/model ourselves? Shall we always be in the shadow of the ‘mainland’?Let’s start to compare ourselves with other emerging nations such as Spain/Portugal/Hungary…
I fully agree with that.

ParticipantI never expected it to ever be built. At least not in Donnybrook.
Shame too, Dublin’s got to get its first Skyscraper sometime, although I don’t really agree that Donnybrook is the place.

ParticipantThanks for posting the pictures.
That chimney/observation tower…how tall is it? Anyone been up there?

ParticipantAwesome pictures. And I agree, they need to chuck the light strip on the midpoint.
Irishtown
ParticipantNo, no, 3020 is too far off. But 2080 sounds good.

ParticipantTo even put in a bid would give them some recognition.

I’d say O’Connell Bridge House was the development that paved the way for Liberty Hall and Hawkins House and the subsequent floor area/plot ratio limit that meant Dublin never got any highrises of good or bad quality. I suspect most would have been bad, however.Hawkins House was built in 1962. Liberty Hall & O’Connell Bridge House were both built in 1965, although I don’t know when in 1965 each was.
And this next bit is a little off topic, but…
I just have to say, since its right next to Bridge House, The O’Connell Bridge Tower is simply one of my favourite buildings on earth.
Irishtown
ParticipantLiberty Hall – first real highrise in Dublin (Hawkins House doesn’t count and if it did, its only 3 years older) and Liberty Hall still remains one of the tallest.

Participant1 down, 35 to go.

Participantabout fjp- I emailed him about using some pictures for SSP a while back, he said i sure could. And if I needed shots of anything else to just ask him. But he doesn’t add to his photo collection on his website anymore. I hope he changes his mind soon. I love his pictures!

ParticipantI have a friend at http://www.fantasyjackpalance.com and he has a good historical Dublin picture section. I looked and couldn’t find anything on the Baggott Street Bridge from back then, but if you ever need current photos, photos for the 70s or 80s, or old photos from the 40s or earlier, check there. Hes got some great stuff.
Sorry I could help further.
July 8, 2004 at 12:46 am in reply to: Does anyone know the architect name for this building? #743680Irishtown
ParticipantIt does look much better in that picture, but I don’t know if I like it still…
The Humana Building on the other hand is great.
