How to make an Irish pub

    1. Get modern building
    2. Fill with old rubbish and mock wood beams
    3. Add foreign staff who can’t speak english, let alone take an order
    4. Give the place a poxy “olde worde Irishe Name” like ‘MacTurcaills of Hoggen Green’ or something equally as bad
    5. Play loads of chart hits very loud all night
    6. Create Myth filled past about pub and its former owners a la Long stone and Messrs Maguire

et viola An Irish Pub (please note Irish pub is a trademark, copyright 2000).

Seriously though these bars are a joke and give off the image of Paddywhackery that we have tried to get rid of.

Hmmm, we have the lowest % subsidy public transport system in Europe and we have the worst public transport system in Europe. I see a link forming here!!! In fact most people realise this, except the government, who all go in there ministerial mercs every day. True Public servants would use public transport. But they dont – because as we are seeing the people in government are only there to serve themselves and their cronies, not the public. They have their heads so far up there own arses that they will do nothing about the gridlock until its too late. As can be seen from the taring over of Leinster Lawn – we have a car based government. And one that gives in to the AA and the SIMI about absolutely everything, for god’s sake they are only pressure groups.

    THE GOVERNMENT ARE PATHETIC

    Hi John,
    Welcome back.
Couldnt agree more with the sentiments expressed, Dublin has become the most depressing kip – just wondering how this clean up of the square mile between O’Connel and Amiens street will go – good luck to them.

How about banning private transport within the canals and having free public transport within the canals instead. It’s a start!!

PS adding 1,000 cars per week to the roads is just plain nuts. Well done Eoin Keegan for cycling in to work, its the sort of top down leadership needed (Now just make the government do it)

Aren’t there enough Hotels in Dublin at this stage. Both budget and 5 star (especially dont build a Hilton – they’re really boring and crappy). I agree with JK’s comments about the apartment sizes, sounds great – I want one, but put the apartments in the tower. Far more interesting to live somewhere like that than have a hotel loking over you. The resty of the scheme seems fine to me, I don’t know what the complaints are about. I can see a day when they start pulling down some of the Zoe developments stuff that was only built there recently.

    Viva la revolution

Sorry that was “the needs of the many out number the needs of the few”.

But no one in government, local or national will ever stand up to these people. Its like those people that delay the demolition of tower blocks by staying put. No one ever stands up to them.

As Spock said in Star Trek 2 “the needs of the few outnumber the needs of the many”.

As for the lack of bins, another solution – carry it home and put it in your own bin and quit whinging about why the “Mammy” figure of the Corporation isn’t there to clean up after you. Pathetic is what it is. The government waste taxes on trying to cater to whinging tossers who behave like spoilt children.

Lets face it, the majority of people in Dublin behave this way, and say “Well there is no bin exactly under my hand therefore I will just have to drop my rubbish here” and the likes of Tony Gregory would agree and say its a traditional Dublin thing to do. I hate to say it but we Irish are a filthy race. We drop rubbish everywhere, we never recycle, why drive our cars wherever we go – even to the corner shop, we build what we want where we want to.. and then expect the corpo to clean up after us…for free.

We only have ourselves to blame! We tolerate our streets, green areas, parks, beaches, nearly everywhere covered in litter, gum, urine, vomit and dog filth. This cannot continue!!

Yes so the government can ignore the litter problem at the same level that they ignore the traffic congestion and the crime problem. Here is a novel solution for the litter problem, do you remember in Primary School when you dopped litter you had to go on litter duty and pick up rubbish for a week, well now apply it to adults, if you had to take a few days off work you would think again about littering.

We really could do with a dictator in this country that could string up Tony Gregory and both Healy-Raes. I propose me. A dictator with an interest in good architecture. Sorted.

Never has a truer word been spoken on this site. Why do we put up with “safe” architecture. The stuff thats built these days is RUBBISH RUBBISH RUBBISH. To hell with Tony Gregory, the man is a tosspot when it comes to architecture, if he had his way Dublin would be one huge housing estate made up of similar 3 bed semi detached socal housing all pinko nonsense. Yes he has done good for social issues in this city but he should put up and shut up when it comes to architecture in this town. Every bastard comes out of the woodwork in this country to object to bloody everything that is proposed not only the NIMBYs of this world, but those who are looking for some financial return. Why cant we force these changes through – thisngs like LUAS really piss me off – something that will civilise the city and cut down on traffic congestion and EVERYONE starts objecting to it. ITS ENVIRONMENTALY SOUND. But no it wont be built properly because our CORRUPT government and ALL the useless bastards in the Dail get driven into work in Mercs and pander to the likes of the SIMI and AA road lobby (putting cars before people). Fianna Fail, Fianna Gael, Labour, PD, whatever they are all usless when it comes to dealingg with the problems in this town. Although I despise him, I think what Dublin needs is a Jackie Healy-Rae of our own, who could force government action in the city.

Thus ends my rant of the day

I think both bridges should be build and are very well designed. Enough xenophobia about foreign architects/architecture.

Quite correct Peter, this monument deserves to be built, I too am sick of the procrastination about how we would be better off building self-effacing VD clinics in Leitrim than “Wasting” money on a piece of public art. We don’t need a ‘Telecom’ tower type thing in the middle of the street (how 1950s can you get), this is all about 21st century – you know the one that we are supposed to be living in at present. The one in Smithfield is fine, and as for all the comments about its lift shaft being ugly – what prey tell is the alternative; everybody including those in wheelchairs has the right to this viewing platform – something disabled access laws enforce.

To turn this project down would be a disaster for forward looking rejuvination of this town.

Yep thats by zoe developments alright, The red brick is cheap looking, but I think the shutters are cool (I belive that zoes wanted to throw up their usual stuff, but the corpo insisted on an architect being hired…well done corpo).

    Rory W

PS I think that they have ground to a halt due to the fact that they cant decide what to do with the ground floor (mind you there is still a crane at Charlotte Quay and that has been basically finished for at least a year and a half – aqnybody know why its still there?).

Quite right Macker, whats rong with the sort of traffic calming that other streets have got such as South William Street, or is that only good enough for the rest of us. putting gates on this street does warrent an extinguishing of right of way, creating a exclusive (and pretentious) enclave (Downing Street how are ye!!!).
