On the contrary, I think for the scale of the project, it’s flying up.
Lots of steel gone up there in the last week or so. I’ll try to bring you update photos as soon as I can.

Meanwhile, here’s some projections of the finished development which i’ve posted here before. Due for completion in Autumn 2007.

Some pictures of the Corn Market Street development taken today. I would like to draw your attention to the sedate farmers market type street trading, as envisaged in the rendering, and the reality of street trading on a Saturday afternoon.

Some pictures I took over the weekend of the Beasley Street and City Square developments. City Square is the regeneration/redevelopment project down in blackpool.

The final picture is of the Jacob’s Mill roof. Not only is it completely out of preportion with respect to the surrounding buildings, it also seems to be made from a type of corrugated sheeting. The stuff normally associated with agricultural outbuildings and light industrial units. It’s amazing how the developer got away with this. Corrugated neck, I guess.

From Lexinton’s blog spot. This was the ‘vision’.

“Developer Tom McCarthy and his wife Michelle McCarthy are devising plans to convert their Jacob’s Mill development to use as a luxury 5-star 35-bedroom boutique hotel. The former mill has lain idle along Father Matthew Quay for almost 45-years and is currently being rejuvenated by contractors O’Flynn of Banteer on Mr. McCarthy’s behalf. The refurbishment design is being handled by Murray O’Laoire Architects with G+A Architects handling interior designs. The redevelopment was originally scheduled to accommodate apartment usage, however a subsequent application will seek a change of use to hotel operations – and the conversion of plans to accommodate 35 bedrooms. It is believed the 20 space parking structure will be retained. The hotel is earmarked to be titled ‘Jacob’s Country House Hotel’.

Could Tom and Michelle explain where white PVC comes in?

Passed by jacobs Mill today. It looks like they are putting in really nasty, small white PVC windows.

It was actually much worse yesterday. The 252 people arrested were for specific public order offences. In total almost 500 people were arrested in Dublin yesterday and even then you have to take into account that the vast majority of incidents were not reported to the police. I’m sorry to say this but there is an underclass in Ireland and it’s gripped by a boiling rage.

“Walking up Grafton St. today I felt like i was in some different city or a parallel universe, almost everyone was drunk, people were drinking out of cans or bottles, people were either falling around the place or being held up by their friends and others were trying to pick fights with passers-by! Meanwhile the Guards stood by just waiting for something to happen…which it did a number of times! In the space of 3 hours I saw an ambulance on Grafton St. 4 times and I saw people being handcuffed by the Guards 5 or 6 times!
Myself and my friend decided to see if Temple Bar was as bad as Grafton St! We were Just crossing Dame St. over to the Bank of Ireland when we saw a group of 5 girls (no more than 17 years of age) getting into a fight with 2 other girls…..several men stood by cheering and another man was recording the whole thiing on his camera!! One of the girls was being kicked and when her friend tried to help her she was turned on by the group of 5 girls, punched in the face and thrown against the gates of the bank!
Eventually the 2 girls got away! At this stage we had gotten across the street(the lights had been red) and we were walking behind the 2 girls towards the Temple Bar area! Myself and my friend realised that neither of them were Irish! We stopped them to ask if they were ok,one of them was crying her eyes out and the other was in complete shock! They had been set upon by the 5 for NO reason! One of the thugs stuck a sticker on one of the girls backs and she took it off & threw it on the ground, when the group saw her throwing the sticker away they started to hit her!! This was the ONLY reason…the girls had just been walking along looking for somewhere to go for food!! We brought them into the toilets in the Bank bar to get them some ice for their badly beaten faces and to calm them down a bit! The 2 girls were Canadians in Ireland for the week specially for St. Patricks week! These girls will not be back! Im sure our attempts at telling them that this is not the norm fell on deaf ears! They are here until Monday and will not be back into town…they are going to stay around Clontarf (where their B&B is) for the next few days! We stayed with the girls for around an hour and got a taxi for them!”

Some of the local residents aren’t too happy about it. Didn’t someone run in the European elections on an anti high rise ticket? I went for a run past Victoria Cross a few nights ago. Passed a few local residents standing outside the Victoria Hall site entrance, they were having an animated conversation. Not exactly happy campers!

No the residue is coming from the bins, take a look at the bins that have been there the longest, the ones closest to Patrick’s bridge. Wait till we go through a winter. I’m sure you remember the older bins; they were large capacity pebble dashed affairs and inside was a removable metal bin. Why not revert to that, and encase the metal bin with the type of granite used in the street renewal. The bins in use at the moment are completely inadequate and very poorly designed.

The Patrick Street renewal was mentioned. The Beth Gaili designed refurbishment of Patrick Street is nice, but there are problems with some of the street furniture, particularly the rubbish bins. They lack the capacity of the older bins and are almost always overflowing with rubbish. They also appear to be porous, so that whenever it rains, a horrible sort of rubbish juice pours onto the pathway. They’ve only been in place for a few weeks but already the area around the bins is covered in a brown sticky residue. The corporation should consider replacing them, as they are completely inadequate.

I’d love to see the FAS building on Sullivan’s Quay demolished and a new landmark city library built on the site. Short of that, could the OPW paint the thing in time for the year of culture?

I was down in UCC the other day and the new art gallery is nearing completion. It looks really good.

Any possibility of Pairc Ui Caoimh being redeveloped and opened up to other sports in the years to come, perhaps minor internationals, Ireland/Italy rugby, that sort of thing?
