Here are a few pics I took in the Clarion hotel during a recent stay in Limerick. Pics taken with phone cam so resolution and quality is not great:

    From today’s Irish Idependent:

DUBLINERS will get a last chance to visit Liberty Hall’s viewing platform today and Sunday before the landmark building is demolished next year.

To enjoy the “spectacular panorama” of the city it provides, the public can call between 10.30am and 2.30pm to view Dublin from the city’s tallest building.

SIPTU plan to redevelop the 41-year-old building, the city’s tallest for four decades. The union is seeking commercial partners to redevelop the valuable, central Dublin site.

I find it strange that people oppose high rise buildings when we’ve had the equivalent of two 70 story buildings over 200 metres tall in Ringsend which are visible outside of Dublin in neighboring counties. The “chimney stacks” are not exactly attractive yet they are there!!! If we can have the equivalent of 70 story towers over a fifth of a kilometre tall in the city, why can’t we have some inhabited buidlings???

If you mean a pic of the studios, then no. Lock looks quite normal in the door – It has been in the door for a few decades now I reckon. If you want some pics of the lock and key, it could be arranged. If that is what you looking for pics of, that is.

Funny you should mention the radio broadcasts from the GPO. Main lock on the door in my house is actually the original lock to the Radio Eireann studios or whatever they had back then. Fine big lock and fantastic looking key.

Good to see Denmark St, well the beginning of it anyway. And I have to say that the street looks really nice with the palm trees and benches. Almost looks mediterranean until you look at the shopfronts, that is.
OK, well when I get a chance, I’ll post up a few more frame grabs if I can find any shots of interest.

Thanks a million for explaining all that Devin. All makes sense now. And I did need to see that pic from post 38 to get my bearings. To be honest, I never even new there used to be a street where the Ilac is now. Presumably this would have linked Dominick and Liffey Streets???

Anyway, regarding where I got the image from: I recorded the program from digital TV onto the hard drive of my DVD recorder, then copied it onto DVD, loaded up the dvd onto my PC and using my editing program, took a frame grab and posted it on here. Quality of picture and sound is excellent as the original film footage was restored. There are many fascinating scenes in this program of Moore St, Smithfield and surrounding areas. I actually have a good few other screen grabs saved to my PC as I have created DVD covers and images to print onto the DVDs themselves to make them look better as I intend to keep this program for archive purposes. I could post up more here if anyone is interested although I’m not sure what the story with doing that is, copyright wise.

Thanking you Morlan – Don’t know why it’s so small in the post by myself. Should’ve came out bigger.

OK, very small pic I know. Apologies. I took this snapshot from the fascinating program about the Moore St Traders originally broadcast way back in 1974 but shown again last week. Credit for this pic is with RTE. Now the pic is of the site now occupied by the Ilac Centre. Question is, the building toward the top left of the pic with the dome, is this Arnotts or possibly Jervis hospital. I first thought it was Arnotts but I think there are too many windows, bay wise. And it looks like the Guiness buildings behind it so this would not be right. Jervis seems to the candidate then? Anyone have any ideas? Sorry for possibly going off-topic. I don’t really think this warranted a new thread.

    Thanks

Yeah, the railing really were very nice indeed but behind them was a complete eyesore. Maybe are some plans to do something actually nice for this new open area. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Although slightly unrelated, has anyone noticed the distinct lack of water in the Liffey at low tide during this recent dry spell? When passing over the Liffey on the LUAS at Heuston the past few mornings, the liffey is looking more like a small stream with mud and trollies and cones everywhere (and a nasty smell!). Maybe the rain forecast this weekend will alleviate things somewhat.

Yeah, the traffic lights do seem very old indeed. Does anyone have any idea has to just how old these traffic lights are. I reckon 50’s or 60’s but that is just a wild guess. But they really do suit the street scene. IMO, they give the street a kind of Parisian feel, or am I just exaggerating a little there?

That’s exactly my point. The chimney stacks are all we have to show in our skyline. And while I’d admit it would make a huge difference to the Dublin skyline if the chimneys were removed (and I would kinda miss them deep down), it’s a pity that our skyline is 2 big chimneys and a big pointy spike – BTW I do love the Spire 😉 Whilst flying into most medium to large developed cities around the world, the first thing that strikes you is the skyscrapers. When I flew into Perth, Australia a few years ago, the view of the city skyline was amazing. And when flying into Toronto, the view was equally spectacular. The plane was nearly on the ground before I even noticed the CN Tower, simply because my eye was drawn to the huge cluster of 50-60 story buildings. Even from the plane, I could tell that I was arriving in a modern and thriving city just from the style and architecture of the buildings. If I was arriving into Dublin by plane for my first time and all I could see was 2 big chimney stacks and a huge low-rise urban sprawl, I reckon I’d assume it’s a fairly non-developed non-descirpt large town.

Now a dozen or so buildings around the same height of the Poolbeg chimney stacks really would look the biz down in the docklands and would also take ones eyes from the chimneys stacks as they are quite ugly, IMO. Some tastefully designed skyscrapers along with the standard glass clad type sky-scrapers would suit the area so well. In fact, they could maybe even help the chimneys blend in a little with their surroundings. And as I drive down the coast road to work and see this proper city skyline, I know I’m driving through a prosperous and developing city – Developing upwards instead of outwards.

I think a nice cluster of decent height “sky-scrapers” would give Dublin a fantastic visual impact, especially when driving from out side the city to the city itself. I know that if I am driving into Dublin on the M1, I can see the ESB chimney stacks at Poolbeg as soon as I get over the hills near Balbriggan. However, if there was an area of decent sized skyscarpers ( not neccessarily that tall, maybe 30 – 50 or 60 stories) in Dublin city, the view driving towards the city would be absolutely amazing IMO as you get closer and closer to the city. I feel it would give myself and others a feeling of knowing where the city centre area is rather than using the chimney stacks as your landmark for Dublin and perhaps The Spire when you get closer and have a good eye. I would feel I would be getting closer to a modern, well developed city rather than a low rise, drab, sprawling “town” – A city that actually looks like a city. The drive from my home on the northside to the city via the coast road is nice with mountains in the distance. The port area and the chimney stacks are the only real land marks. Until the Spire went up, my notion of where the city centre is (O’Connell St) was totally different to where I now know it to be, when driving to the city on the coast road. Now a nest of skyscrapers in the city or the docklands with the Dublin mountains in the background would make a fantastic vista. In a decade or so, I could picture myself lying in the sun on Dollymount beach (thanks to global warming 🙂 ) with 50 story skyscapers about a mile or 2 away. What a strange sight that would be. Or would it? We already have the chimney stacks which are huge and not that easy on the eye and yet nobody seems to have a problem with these. Anyone know what the height of the stacks are equivalent to number of stories, rather than in metres or feet?

    Hi Lotts
Just replying about the 3 lanes of traffic into 2. Only 2 lanes from O’Connell Bridge are for going straight ahead. The other two are right turns only.

yeah, I saw the lights driving down the coast road through Clontarf on the way home from work last night and boy, are they bright!!!! When I got to my house in Baldoyle and looked up at the sky from the back garden, I could clearly see the light reflecting off the clouds, even with all the light pollution between Baldoyle and Poolbeg. They really do look pretty cool. I wonder if the ESB are putting the lights on tower 2? A good few of them flashing at night would look great, IMO 😀
