I agree. I really hope Sir J Rogersons Quay gets built. I also hope that they continue along those lines and construct similar buildings.

Yes, Dublin is a fine example of a Georgian city and it’s only right that that should be noted and a sence of pride taken in it. But what is wrong with leaving a representation of 20th and 21th century architecture to go alongside these great Georgian and Victorian buildings in order to mark our city’s chronoligical development? Our citizens should indeed take pride of past architectural glories, but not be stuck in them.

According to skyscrapers.com Sir John Rogersons Quay development has been given the go ahead. It comes under the approved section. What’s going on?!!

    Rita,

I think from this evidence is obvious that no attempt whatsoever is being made to hide such weapons!!

I think the Spike is “Mr Hankey”. The reason all of us on the site can see it, is because we all believe in it and love it. I’ve seen people in O’Connell street simply walk into it, because they refuse to believe it’s there!

    Fin,

The Ballymun flats themselves weren’t a mistake. It was the fact that once built, they were more or less left to their own devices and consequently fell into dissrepair. There should have been more of an integrated plan. Dublin even then, was running out of space and building upwards as opposed to outwards was seen as a logical step. Even today, with land been more of a scarcity in Dublin, we still insist in building out and not providing the necessary transportation/local amenities to go with this sprawl. As a result, we now have “standstill traffic” because so many people have to commute from miles away and not by public transport, but by car. Tall buildings both resedential and office are the only way forward, if people in Dublin are to be able to afford to live there. Before long, I can see Greater Dublin spreading as far inland as Athlone, if we don’t change our tune – OK maybe not as far as Athlone!

I (and I know I’ll probably be the only to hold this opinion) think that knocking down Ballymun will be a big mistake.

The graphical content and wording of the proposal is put together in a very amateurism manner. However, I like what is been proposed, especially the tower, if Galwegians don’y have the same outdated aversion to anything more than 5 stories as us Dubs, maybe this will get passed.

I can see the headlines now “Jim Larkin, in King Kong identity scare”

The recently reserected Jim Larkin, last night shocked Dubliners by climbing up to the top of liberty hall, then changing himself back into a much larger version of his statue, imortalised in Dublin’s O’Connel street.
This move, the latest in a whole series of King Kong solidarity strikes aims to etc etc etc blah de blah etc etc etc blah de blah etc etc etc blah de blah……….

From what I’ve seen of Limerick city, it streetscape resembles very much an industrial town with Georgian architecture thrown in.

Nice enough place which seems to be undergoing a bit of a facelift. Next time I go, I’m staying at the Clarion!

You say that none of those people you mention would steal my Camera, but the last time I was in Limerick I had my car nicked as I went in to buy a bag of chips. I’d only been gone a couple of minutes too!

I said, “Oh my God, who stole my car” and a group of lads replied at once, “it was Wogan”!
Now, if Wogan is capable of stealing a car, a camera would be childsplay to him!!

Ah C’mon! That was meant purely tongue in cheek and was not intended to cause offense.
If anyone has taken any offence to this, I apologise. But to use a well known Ulster phrase “Ah catch yerself on would ye” 😉

It shouldn’t really be tainted. As, the city centre is architecturally quite nice and (contrary to popular belief) the people are quite friendly!

One thing though, if you wander off the beaten track and end up in a local housing estate and a gang of people come up to you and ask you your religion; don’t say Catholic or Protestant as you won’t know what their persuasion they might be. The “wrong answer” could involve you parting company with your kneecaps! Don’t say atheist either, because then they’ll ask you if you’re a Protestant Atheist or a Catholic one! Just turn and run!!

If you follow these rules, you’ll be OK!
Also, a culinary must is an “Ulster Fry” It’s just like an Irish breakfast, except they’ve got what is called tatty bread. Potatoe cakes to non Ulster folks!

Speaking of Phibsborough – An interesting area and home to the great Bohemian fc! Next game is on 26th Jan. Here you will be entralled by the sheer grace of Dublins and indeed Irelands finest exponents of ‘the beautifull game’!

    Quaint?? Please!!

There’s nothing quaint about Dublin. If you want to see quaint, hire a copy of the ‘quiet man’ on video or dvd;-)

My top 5 interesting places to visit would be
(1)The house of Lords chamber of the bank of Ireland building on Dame street. On Tues and Thursdays there is a free lecture on the history of the place. (2) Trinity College. (3)Grafton street. The only street I’ve ever walked, where you can hear Jaz music at the beggining and a string quartet by the time you reach the end. In between, you’ll probably have heard rendtions of beatles songs, seen a crazy bloke swallow fire and witnessed some nutters walking on glass. (4) For a change from the predictable, visit pooebeg power station (The really tall chimneys) You can go on a tour and it’s located smack bang in the middle of the industrial docks area. (5) The Masonic lodge on Kildare street. (6) (OK, I said 5, but I’m being greedy!) Up the top of Graton street is Stevens Green. A nice respite from a tiring day. It’s a city park with a sculpted landscape. It includes 2 lakes with an abundance of bird life which you can feed – to your cat! It also contains a statue of Oscar Wilde, who you can go up to and tell about the interesting tiring day you’ve had!

    Regards,

    Thanks fjp,

I look forward to seeing it “in the flesh” so to speak, when I get back to Dublin on 3rd Jan. Do you reckon it will be complete by then?

    Happy Christmas to all
