Flew into the cattle shed that is Dublin Airpport this morning from Porto – the contrast in experience couldn’t be more different (and we’re the ones enjoying a 10 year boom?)

Porto – a simple 30 minute metro ride costing 1.40 to a sleek, contemporary terminal (see how pretty it looks https://archiseek.com/content/showthread.php?t=4539)

Dublin – portacabin sheds stretching for what seems like miles into the mayhem of baggage reclaim as several planeloads of people crowded 4 deep waiting for their luggage…then onto a stinky bus (5euros!) which had to be diverted because of traffic caused by the wexford/kilkenny match

if we have any national pride – or pity for harrased travellers – the current terminal should be razed and replaced immediatly

Most of these apartments are being let to transient twenty-somethings with no connection or interest in the future of Smithfield – this certainly won’t help to improve the atmosphere…after all of this developement, the square still looks scuffy with little cohesion visually or in terms of the surrounding community

Pugin built 5 or 6 churches in Wexford – follow this link http://www.wexfordweb.com/pugin.htm

My old school St Peters (you may have read about it in the Ferns Report!) has a really charming Pugin Chapel – the altar is especially lovely although I believe the church layout was significantly reordered in the ’60s..

The train journey from Dublin to Wexford is fantastic – teetering along stunning cliffsides, past that Soviet style factory outside Arklow and through the lushiest parts of North Wexford, Ferrycarraig and then along the quays of Wexford itself

There are tons, TONS of graphic design companies in Dublin – in fact most people would say the market is saturated – its not hard to find them..also a few graphic design associations knocking about like the GDBA

My point is, Helloinsane, to question the merit of awarding a pretigious design award to a building thats frankly pretty dull and conventional. What were the critera for the award – does inventiveness, pushing boundries of ‘taste’ play a part? I guess I’m playing devils advocate – I’m not an architect just a joe soap with an interest in my built environment.

Beauty is in the eye’ i guess; where you see restraint and integrity, I see a building thats entirely formulaic in its references..all the typical architectural cliches you’d expect from a house like this..

still, it’ll be nice when the owners get nets’ up on those windows..mmm

“Elegant”?..Someone enlighten me because to my eye its an austere, humourless, charmless lump of architectural masturbation – like an unimaginative child given their first set of lego..maybe its all the hard landscaping around but I bet its uncompromising nature makes it an pretty unpleasant environment to live in too..

    Anyone else go to this?

Guess this area gets enough exposure on TV, but I didn’t learn anything I didn’t know already..

Inside looks really smart – some lovely fossils in the entrance hall floor and the reading room upstairs looks great. Main library downstairs is kinda curious – about 30 computer stations along one wall but a really rubbish selection of books..

Who were the architects? I believe in name and shame – maybe we could start a poison pen campaign to their “creatives”.. or was it ‘designed’ by a Willy Joe one lunchtime while the lads were down in Londis getting his hang roll and bottle of milk?

Jaaz, I hear you on that building that sticking its ugly rear onto Capel street – tinted windows – mmmm and as for Kitty O’ Sheas – great location wasted, truly depressing

Thanks for your posts but again this is just an couple with an average budget (300k – 400k) not U2… Would a decent architect be even interested in taking on a small project like this? I’ve always had the impression that only the seriously wealthy could afford an architect designed build…?
