The railway arrived here in 1846. Wonderful symmetrical composition with flanking wings and the stationmaster’s residence in the upper floor of the central building. Those quarters have a small balcony over the ticket hall. The exterior granite and limestone stonework is robustly detailed, the rail side with its breakfront and small pediment almost a small country house composition, an Italianate villa. The building suffers visually from the large expanse of tarmacadam out front. The station was the junction station for the underused 1866 built branch line to Palace East on the Dublin Wicklow & Wexford Railway’s north Wexford line. A Great Southern & Western signal cabin has been removed.
