vinnyfitzParticipant
can’t put my finger on the relevant release right now but basically roche has an on going feud with An Taisce which included a gratuitous attack on an Taisce for not keeping its own property tidy. Silly season stuff.
I’m sure Diaspora could put his finger on the relevant press report?
For a more depressing and broader background on relations between Roche and An Taisce just do a google search.
vinnyfitzParticipantHard to tell.
Some people suggest he has a set against An Taisce – remember the crisp bags press release?
On the other hand he has a relatively honourable tradition in terms of Wicklow planning – if that is not two oxymorons in one.
On the negative side his ego was already about the size of Ireland. I suspect he will be insufferably self important.
September 26, 2004 at 11:17 pm in reply to: Denis O’Brien to build 26 storey residential in Donnybrook #736935vinnyfitzParticipant“serious consideration”… by the city council.
It will be interesting to see if ABP take a different perspective…
September 26, 2004 at 6:37 pm in reply to: Denis O’Brien to build 26 storey residential in Donnybrook #736933vinnyfitzParticipantI imagine that, having gone this far, Denis will appeal to ABP again.
Personally I’d be in favour of this project.September 25, 2004 at 1:01 pm in reply to: college green/ o’connell street plaza and pedestrians #746025vinnyfitzParticipantThe AIB in Foster Place was acquired by Trinity. If they had any imagination the College Authorities should include one or more cafes spreading out “Terrasse” style into Foster Place in the redevelopment plans.
But to work well that would require booting the loitering taxis out of Foster Place which probably would not go down well….
vinnyfitzParticipantThe only buses that should be turning here are the ones feeding from the Luas green line to the Red Line. I had assumed these would be Imps. Which would not be too bad. Can anyone confirm?
vinnyfitzParticipantAll seems pretty sensible.
I like the point about cycle lanes on all sides of the green but would be mad curious to see where and how these are proposed to work.
It really bugs me when they say it is proposed to consult on all aspects but then don’t reveal the manner or time table for the consultation.
If the only traffic going around the Grafton St corner is going to Glover’s alley then there must be scope to do more with the spare road space here than simply make a turning circle for buses?
BTW I don’t suppose someone could persuade the Stephen’s Green Centre to turn down their Muzak pollution now that it is no longer competing with much traffic noise!

Maybe the owner built it as a way of making a rude gesture to his wealthy neighbours. Maybe he is taking the piss out of conservationists.
I seem to recall the Phoenix reporting that the Irish Georgian Society had thier christmas drinks or some similar function in Johnny’s Burlington Rd Mosque last December. Or am I misremebering?
September 20, 2004 at 10:44 am in reply to: Senator McSharry – defender of democratic purity #745912vinnyfitzParticipantAlan, can you post a link to the ABP decision?
Its not amongst the recent significant decisions on their site so without the file number its hard to find the “the most critical rejection from an appeal body” and read it for ourselves. Thanks
vinnyfitzParticipantIn general it seems the whole thing is working quite well.
Tweaking rather than abandonment seems to be the way forward.
Not really sure what happened to the promised consultation before the whole thing goes permanent?
Evening tailbacks at top of Pembroke St seem only intermitent. Illegal u-turns by vehicles outside the Shelbourne into Merrion Row are far too frequent.
Bus stops on Green North wrongly placed, Contraflow bus lane down Earlsfort Terrace not yet introduced etc. etc. But this is all fine tuning.I hope they stick to their convictions.
vinnyfitzParticipantPredictable enough.
I wonder how long it will be before the “poor clares” sell their neighbouring property? It must be worth a packet now.vinnyfitzParticipantCatherine got 137 votes in Boyle being 2.38% of a quota.
Luke “Ming” topped the poll in Castlerea ward with a remarkable 1050 votes so was elected on the 1st count. (OT but does anyone know if prisoners get a vote in their district of incarceration?)
vinnyfitzParticipantOutstanding!
How could the good people of Roscommon have rejected an offer of such expertise? 😀
vinnyfitzParticipantI seem to recall Ms Ansbro presenting herself (unsuccessfully) as a candidate for the Green Party in the recent local elections in Roscommon.
vinnyfitzParticipantAn ABP decision on the doubling of the scale of the AIB HQ is due any time now.
vinnyfitzParticipantShe did very well on Morning Ireland this morning.
vinnyfitzParticipantOdd
It should be possible to fine tune this – to allow 2 lanes for outbound buses and still have 2 for inbound traffic.vinnyfitzParticipantYou predicted correctly Gabriel
Dublin Bus announced their plans a few days ago but they only got coverage yesterday:Buses inbound will operate as follows:
Routes 14-14A-15-15A-15B-15C-44-44C-48A: These routes will turn right off Harcourt Street onto Hatch Street Upper, then onto Hatch Street Lower, turning left onto Leeson Street. They will then turn right onto St. Stephen’s Green East, then left onto St. Stephen’s Green North and then into Dawson’s Street.
Routes 44-44C-48A: These routes will turn right at the bottom of Dawson’s Street to Nassau Street, Leinster Street South and onto their route at Lincoln Place.
Routes 10-10A-11-11A-11B-13B-46-46A-46B: All Xpresso and the above stated routes will turn right from Leeson Street Lower onto St. Stephen’s Green East then onto St. Stephen’s Green North and onto their route on Dawson’s Street.
Route 20B: will turn right at the top of Kildare Street and will operate from St. Stephen’s Green North.
Bus stops have been sited on St. Stephen’s Green North for all of the above routes.
Outbound buses operate as normal.
vinnyfitzParticipantThis is an interesting discussion notwithstanding the unusually polemical thread title.
Lexington, thanks for the list of projects but can I press you a bit more on what exactly is An Taisce’s sin in the process?
Is it because they waste time or because they tell tales outside Cork?OK I get the point about the delay in knocking the house in Passage West. But is the problem generally delays – “vexatious” appeals that hold things up for 4 months before ABP bins them?
Or, is your problem really with ABP itself – that it overrules Cork City Council decisions?
You see, I do have sympathy with Diaspora’s point. An Taisce does not make planning decisions. I sort of get the impression that you wish they would go away ‘cos if they were absent no one else would try and encourage “Dublin” (ABP) to interfere in “Our” (Cork) planning decisions.
vinnyfitzParticipantIts funny. I hear so much unjustified and unsubstantiated criticism of An Taisce that I tend to mistrust most hostile rants against the organisation (of which I am not a member).
However, Lexington, your complaint is a new one for me. Could you provide any data to back up your criticism?
How many major developments have been proposed?
How many have been objected to by an Taisce?
How often have the objections been upheld by Cork CoCo? How often by ABP?
Is your problem mainly with the delays caused or with the decisions being taken by planning authorities further to An Taisce objections?(By the way in the interests of disclosure – but not to take away from the validity of your comments – have you been involved in any project which has been stymied further to an An Taisce appeal?)
On a point of information An Taisce is not, by and large, funded by the taxpayer.
One further question – are the objections you refer to mainly submitted by the Cork branch or the national organisation?
