    He was at the ceremony but so was the new chap. I think he’s finishing out his handover. Terry Durney was there too. All in all I think they have done a great job.

    Hey Adhoc,
    I was there too. Got a few pictures . Low res I’m afraid ( must get a decent digital camera ) but they give some idea of what its like. Also saw the new river boat which I snapped as well.

    The Docklands master plan also indicates another pedestrian bridge at Castleforbes street and a lifting bridge across the Royal Canal/Dodder at Ringsend.

    Here’s a couple more shots. The difference in levels can be adjusted by turnbuckles on the cables. The fenders are required I imagine to prevent ships hitting the superstructure as it projects far beyond the base even when the sections are fully open. I would agree that the colour choice is very poor.

    Heres one I took at the weekend. Note the floating ship “fenders” which were installed at the insistance of teh port authorities I understand.

    Nice shot of the Custom House. In the same vein the Blue Coat School, Museum of Modern Art Kilmainham but not sure what the lighting is like at night. I think one of the best lighting schemes is the Dept of the Taoiseach near Merrion Square. It used to be the old UCD school of Engineering and looks particularly fine at night. Collins Barracks Musuem on Benburb Street is good if a little austere. Heuston Station facade has OK lighting ( Connolly is a mess so avoid). Theres a few of the churches which are worth checking out..St Patricks, Christ Church etc. I don’t think you’ll be short of subjects.

    Theres a bit of info on the Luas section of the RPA website at http://www.rpa.ie. There used to be detailed maps but they are no longer available.
    You can get the original Light Rail order plans and EIS from any local authority planning office. Not completely accurate however as changes during construction are not show. Otherwise your best bet is to call in to the RPA offices in Parkgate Street where you can get info.

    Dunville Ave is really silly. The original station was elevated and bits of it were demolished during the building of the new stop. Perhaps it was saving some money which dictated the current arrangement ( a high level station nowadays requires ramps and lifts and therefore more land) but its at the expense of reduced efficiency for traffic and trams. A silly arrangement and one that will be seen to be very stupid if and when the line is upgraded to Metro.

    By the way theres a new image on the RPA web site showing the old tram outside the Harcourt Station which merges into the new tram which is amusing, Follow the link below, if that fails try the RPA site, follow the Luas link and the section called en-route and then photo gallery.

    Took the Luas today and it was Packed!!!!!! 🙂

    The original scheme split the track as the crossed the O’Connell bridge with one on each side of the monument. The central area behind teh statue then became one huge island platform. It showed a link turning into Abbey Street on the west side ( at that time the line to Connolly did not exist ). The movements here with crossing traffic, pedestrians and trams would be very complicated I think.

    Suppose the lines merely crossed with passengers walking to Abbey Stop to change lines, then theres a crossover issue to be tackeled as the inbound tram needs to get to the other track for the outbound journey. As I see it if this is placed behind the stop then you would have the crossover in front of the GPO. In any event the newly laid surfacing will take a hammering.

    The original Light Rail Order proposals for the central portion are still available in the Civic offices in Tallaght and probably elsewhere. It showed shared running for Bus and Tram in Nassau street. This happens on tram systems all over the works and personally I think teh opportunity for more of it should have been taken with the two existing lines. The corner with Dawson Street looked like it was very tight with the footpath being clipped back ( anyone who uses this crossing wil know that it can be very crowded with pedestrians). The stop in Dawson Street was between Molesworth Street and that small laneway just north with the next one in front of the Westin.

    Although some roadways are shown with different traffic flow s, so there may be minor tweaks required, I would imagine that the new proposals will be almost identical. It worked then and the recent changes have only served to reduce the interface with private traffic.

    By the way has anyone noticed that the Luas bridge at Charlemont is being clad with some type of spandrel panels ?

    Great source of pictures at http://hip.nli.ie/#focus. The online catalogue search will not distinguish between colour and black and white however.

    Eh, probably because there are electronic indicators at all stops stating the destination of the next three trams. On the Red Line launch these seemed to be working by Saturday and they appear to be more reliable than the ones on the Green Line. Maybe they have ironed out the bugs !!

    Quite Right notjim.

    The gauge of both Luas Lines is the same and its possible to run the 40m trams on both lines with no difficulty. The tracks on the green line are spaced wider apart to allow for wider bodied vehicles passing each other( means the platform edges may need to be shaved back or else the body of the tram at the base can be narrowed with a wider section above). Some Hannover trams are built like this allowing the same platform width but a wider body above providing more seating room.

    Had a run on the line today. Disapponted to see the station at Connolly not fully open yet and ticket machines not giving sample tickets as with Green Line launch but overall looks like a good service.

    This is one I downloaded a long time ago from the old Luas/RPA web site. The new sites have far less photos and information.

    You can see from this image that the traffic island has been changed. There was a line of trees with a bus pull in behind but on site they have just widened Amiens Street.

    The canopy structure seems to have a lattice and the supports are in a different location.

    Here’s a side elevation taken a few weeks back before the cladding was applied.

    As for the costs the RPA has claimed that the actual figure is closer to 12 million. Still a heap of money though.

    Compaired to the original photomontages you can see that the structure has been made much bulkier and the support legs are fatter.
