I purchased a new camera last week – Canon 300D Digital SLR.
I’m looking for recommendations on some grand buildings to photo in Dublin. These ones are on my list: Government Buildings, Four Courts, City Hall. – all these buildings are lit up well at night. I’ve only done one so far.. Custom House.

Any suggestions on where to go.. I want to get a list of locations in town and make an evening of it sometime very soon. I will post any new Dublin building shots in this thread if that’s OK with you Paul.

    Thanks

Nice shot of the Custom House. In the same vein the Blue Coat School, Museum of Modern Art Kilmainham but not sure what the lighting is like at night. I think one of the best lighting schemes is the Dept of the Taoiseach near Merrion Square. It used to be the old UCD school of Engineering and looks particularly fine at night. Collins Barracks Musuem on Benburb Street is good if a little austere. Heuston Station facade has OK lighting ( Connolly is a mess so avoid). Theres a few of the churches which are worth checking out..St Patricks, Christ Church etc. I don’t think you’ll be short of subjects.
    Good luck.

“Dept of the Taoiseach near Merrion Square”

A pastiche building if ever there was one, early 20th century too

You might want to take the “s” off “Customs”. Heuston Station has one or two broken lights at the moment which spoil it – you might be able to photoshop the picture though.

And what about the poor Custom House?!
There’s more blown than working! Look at that scheme – if you asked a 6 year old to light it that’s what they’d do.
Otherwise great pic Morlan – see you used a wide(r) angle lens as it’s not possible to fit the whole building in with a standard one, very annoying!

Be exceptionally wary of photographing Government Buildings – the Gardai there’ll nab you if you don’t ask permission first.
    Believe me ๐Ÿ™‚

The Four Courts is by far the most photogenic of the major classicals, esp the view looking east along the quays in the evening sun.
Try the Castle St facade of City Hall too – fabulous piece of architecture round there and not often seen. The carving is some of the best you’ll find.
Lots of lovely photos to be had around Fitzwilliam Square and Pemboke St too.

I wouldn’t worry too much. Its only the city shield of Limerick that is not lit up (maybe that is deliberate)

Methinks the Photoshop saturation level has fallen off the scale ๐Ÿ™‚

Love the first O’Cll St one with the dof – very striking. Dublin looks fantastic in evening sun.
The Spire was looking great this morning in the sun too after weeks of dull days.

Except that feckin great lump of a signpost frame – one of many about the place.
Yes striking image – if the res is there a close-up on cupola with the dark sky behind could be good too.

There’s a great, albeit cliched shot achievable from further back on Merrion Sq with all of the lampposts piling up.
The best for that effect though is the Georgian Mile – only you will need a cherry-picker ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks Morlan, your pictures are fabulous.
I wish more people who post can ILLUSTRATE their points
instead of being just text talking-heads – this is
    so BORING.
