I think the Japanese actually came to the Government a few years ago (pre Luas) and OFFERED to build/design the whole thing – charge what they like then hand it over sometime in the future. What was so bad about that plan then, and so good about it now?!?

I hope the Japanese get to do it – assuming any similarities to their own rail networks!

And using the Port Tunnell Machine – that sounds way too efficient… is this Ireland?

The North Earl St bit of Clery’s is yuck – esp compared to the O’Connell St Facade.

Henry St has fairly good paving – although it’s hidden under a carpet of chewing gum – is there any point in spending a fortune on Grafton St if the same fate awaits it?
The new look paving in Patrick St, Cork is already looking shabby (the bit that’s done that is)

How great is that site?!? Irony free zone methinks… or transition year project. I love the the fact that the 100m tower has an observation deck – you know – to get that great view of um – Salthill, and even better: the site seeks to align the Salthill tower with other “world great” towers with the pictures & weblinks.

The leopardstown plan was with the old CEO it was going to be his “mark”. But he’s gone, the company is being split for market opening and I think the new guy is well happy to stay where he is. An alternative plan being discussed is that they move one block North (i.e. the east side of Merrion Sq – which they also own).

I said it was an integral part of Dublin!
I don’t think it’s the most attractive building in the city – I do like the recladding though. But I think Dublin would be at a loss if it was gone – so I guess I kinda like it in a perverse way!

The guy who bought London Bridge thought he was buying Tower Bridge – i.e. the one everyone calls London Bridge, but isn’t…
So maybe we could sell off another theatre brick by brick (Andrews Lane perhaps – you can’t even see it from any street anyway!) hoping the Americans wouldn’t notice.

Dublin doesn’t really have any “views” as such with the river included. Other than O’CBH, Lib Hall, Ha’penny and the liffey… nicely framed, well balanced view from Essex bridge. It’s what you see coming from the Heuston direction. Four Courts are about all you see going west.

I agree. Retail space is so tight in the Grafton St area – anything new on the market is brilliant news. Better there than Liffet Valley anyway. As far as I know the asset stripping of Eircom is well underway – Soros &co selling it off piece by piece, as a result all of their (eircom) retail outlets throughout the country are up for grabs.

Yeah – to alot of people (esp those from outside the pale) – O’CBH is an integral part of Dublin. It has been around for much longer than some of us! It’s vile, hideous and misplaced – but this is planning corruption Ireland we’re talking about here. It’s a part of the skyline (why little Dublin actually has).

I think the problem with County Hall Cork, and it’s kind is that they were left fall into complete disrepair – the whole glasshouse renovation plan has come about because 40 years have passed without a single repair job on the building – concrete columns were in threatening to fall off it – plus I read it was “unenvironmentally friendly” which probably means Cork Co Co were spending a fortune to heat it.
I don’t think County Hall would look to bad if it was cared for over the years. Although why is it in the middle of a field?!?
I think Central Bank, Dame St is looking v.grimey these days. County Hall of the future?

    Fair enough!
I agree that damaging the old is wrong, recent example archers garage down the road from ESB. But those houses have long been demolished and putting a fake facade up only serves to pretend that nothing has happened on the street. I’m not suggesting that the building is fine the way it is though… The odd thing is history has now come full circle – the interior foyer of said ESB building is now itself listed!

Hi, I’m new to this site.
Regarding Fitzwilliam St – just because something was built in “Georgian Times” doesn’t necessarily mean it should be kept for ever – ESB were allowed to demolish those houses – which were considered “crap” for the era – and replace them with a building designed by a noted architect of the time. Alot of Merrion Sq area was built by speculative developers to poor standards for the day. In the 60’s even the government had plans to remove an entire side of Merrion Sq! I admit the HQ looks out of place for the area – but is building a fake facade really the answer? It sounds a bit tacky, and masks the fact that this is a city with history – both past and future – not some freeze frame of 1825. Walking down Fitzwilliam Sq reminds me of that. Also, last I heard, ESB are going nowhere.
