to acito and partners, respectfully, i think your scheme was omitted from the exhibition because it was woefully inadequate in terms of exploration of the brief, and expression of a suitable and strong concept to develop the site.
Being candid for a moment, what the hell were you thinking? Only Peter Chomowicz managed to make more a messy building. At least some entries were honest about their intentions to ridicule this project (De Matos Storey Ryan)

ParticipantLet us know what kind of response you get. It is unfortunate that entrants such as yourself feel that you need to take this kind of action.

ParticipantThe bridge should be able to take what traffic is required of it. This should have been taken into account when building the bridge. It is not fair to blame the Gardai for the damage, as their use of the bridge is quite reasonable.
The material specked should have been up to the task.

ParticipantI heard something similar but was unable to verify it.

I also notice they surface is way tougher than the Dublin one and no stupid lights underfoot, they are under the bridge and to its side, i.e PRACTICAL.In my opinion, the great design elements are the modernisation of the Hlpenny Bridge concept. Though technology they have been able to reverse some of the traits of the original bridge, while maintaining a visable relationship. E.g. Where on the old bridge the lights needed to be structurally supported overhead, on the new one they are reversed and placed in the paving. The old bridge needed to have a high arched back in order to support itself, the new bridge has a more shollow arch due to advancements in material strenghts & manufacturing techniques.
I love the new bridge, it is a truely modern rendition of the original.

ParticipantWhat I meant was, surely the damage being done by the horseys is only speeding up the inevitable degradation of the surface.
bluefoam
ParticipantNot sure I agree with you, should a foot bridge not be able to take the weight of a horse – the average weighing less than half a tonne. Surely the damage they are creating is only showing the weakness in the materials which it seems will degrade with sustained usage?
Nice photo el architino, but you might want to run it through photoshop, the colours seem slightly unreal.

Sorry, Shadow. I agree with you. You happened to get a post in without me seeing it.
Could people be driving umerellas into the surface?

ParticipantThere is an estate in south Dublin called Farmleigh. A new development 2 miles away was to be called Fernleigh. After objections they renamed the new estate but used the name Fernleigh in another new development a few miles further away.
If that is as creative they can get with naming houses how can we expect them to be capable of designing creative buildings.

ParticipantI heard they found some stuff in Dunnes when they started to take it down and the demolishing/building work has been delayed for the archeologists to move in.
It was a Viking burial, which they believe to predate the time they thought the Vikings had originally arrived.
Can anyone back this up?

ParticipantI hear that Singapore has reversed its ban on gum. The black market grew to heights never seen before it was made illegal and they lost alot of tax revenue.

ParticipantI am not sure they deserve any development along Sandymount Strand. I was absolutley disgusted by the reaction to the gift of the sculpture ‘Awaiting The Mariner’ from the Mexican Ambasador. Their complaints about this contemporary structure looking out of place in their peaceful little trditional stretch. All well and good, until you notice the hodgepodge of buildings from georgian to 1980’s crappy apartment blocks and a giant illuminated Esso garage which occupies your vision, the street furniture is also terrible with all sorts of odd looking structures from bumble bee painted barriers on the beach car parks to strange looking tuff loos nesting beside the Martello Tower.
The sculpture is the least offensive structure in the area (whether you are a fan of it or not), the objectors should be ashamed of their reation to this gift, I just hope that Mexicans were not too insulted.

ParticipantIreland has the third lowest income tax rate in the developed world (according to John Bowman) it is up to you what you pay for after that. If you want a car you pay the associated charges, therefore I (who doesn’t own a car) do not have to pay for the upkeep of the roads. Its the same with bin charges etc… why should everyone pay the refuse charge if they aren’t creating the problem…
…& the argument that we all produce refuse is irrelevant.
Edited for spelling. (I blame the education system).

ParticipantI think that Irish people need to wise up to the benefits of design, then the shops will begin to notice. As for IKEA, they do offer mass produced flatpack ‘designed’ goods, but I have heard that the quality has suffered recently.

ParticipantB & Q want to open dozens of new stores in Ireland as soon as the size restriction is lifted, they are a great business model but they will take a huge amount of money out of the country.

ParticipantThere are constant feeder buses up and down the quays. These buses are easlily accessed from most parts of the city (including Grafton St.) by foot. I have to say that it has never occured to me to get a bus from one end of the city centre to the other. It is as quick to walk.

ParticipantPersonally, I believe that as a nation our standards are too low, from design stage through to completion. There was never any emphasis on the quality of engineering that went into the spike.
I believe we are very immature when it comes to design, most of our population are extremely undereducated on the benefits of good design and our design and manufacturing industries are stifled by the lack of emphasis we put on good design at every level.
I realise that this all goes back to the old argument about our lack of an industrial revolution …… But it is time to put some real effort into educating Irish people in an active manner about design.
By the way, I have noticed that the only noise being made about the poor quality of the spike is coming from this site, I don’t hear anyone else complaining.
…. Ah sure it’ll do, won’t it!
