      What decides which surface finish between the rails? On Abbey Street Upper, the area between Capel Street and Jervis Street has been filled with the embossed concrete finish that mimics cobbles (badly) but the area between Jervis Street and Liffey Street seems to be tarmacadam between the rails. Why? Surely Middle Abbey Street is more important that Upper Abbey Street?

      And as is described here, they are using small granite setts in Smithfield.

      Yeah, it would be nice to see a bit of consistency, rather than make it up as you go along. For the time and money it’s taking, I’d have imagined they would have used cobbles along the whole city route….

      Evidently not.. Probably blame pipes and utilities

      Perhaps is something to do with the street being more heavily used by other traffic… a lot of buses previously used Middle Abbey St as a terminus.

      They have used the embossed concrete on parts of Benburb Street. I think they have cobbles along the front of Collins Barracks.

      The reason for the different surfacing is that in some areas traffic is allowed to mount the rail trackbed. This happens where theres a single lane of traffic alongside so if a vehicle breaks down or theres a blockage of the traffic lane then the cars etc can drive around it by driving on the tram lines ( keeping an eye out for approaching trams one hopes !!! ).

      In other areas the tram alignment is segregated fully and road vehicles other than emergency services are not permitted to travel along the track under any circumstances.

      Most of the surfacing is dictated by the Councils anyway as the LUAS contractors have had to get agreement to the proposals in each area and whats being put in is actually quite different in some cases from the EIS proposals which were originally put forward.

      Anyone got any recent photographs on the work done so far on each of the lines? I had a look recently at http://www.luas.ie but it seems as if it hasn’t been updated for months.

      The luas.ie website is very poor for updates. In parts they are still talking about construction that took place last December!!!!!

      MB you should look back at past threads and see what Gabriel Conway about the buses site has posted.
