Winnipeg Schools
1913 – Isaac Brock School, Barratt Ave., Winnipeg
Architect: J.B. Mitchell
Probably the finest architecturally of Mitchell’s schools that are still standing, and the largest. Issac Brock was designed to hold over 1300 children in over 30 classrooms. A massive block, it contains two courtyard light wells. The main facade is a wonderful series of advancing planes with a short tower over a grand main entrance.
At opening it contained a balconied auditorium with stage, and what was claimed to be the best equipped school library in Western Canada. It was formally opened by Sir Hugh John Macdonald, son of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. Named after British Army officer and colonial administrator Isaac Brock (1769-1812).
