1915 – Former Dominion Post Office, Stonewall, Manitoba

The outstanding building in Stonewall is this Dominion Post Office designed by Francis Conroy Sullivan (1882-1929) of the Department of Public Works. Sullivan was one of only two Canadian pupils of Frank Lloyd Wright. Sullivan worked in the Oak Park studio in 1907 but returned to Ottawa in 1908 bringing the Prairie School style to Canada. He was an architect for the Canadian Department of Public Works from 1908 to 1911, after which he had an independent practice in Ottawa until 1916 when he moved to Chicago again. With a strong horizontal emphasis and a palpable sense of solidity, the Dominion Post Office is constructed in the local limestone. Used as a post office until 1978 after which it was used as a library for some years.
