Was just reading about the huge plans for both Limerick docklands and the proposed new Galway port. It said Limerick is a 40acre site and Galway has 32acres. Does anyone know what the size of the area up for development in the Cork docklands?

It also said that for Galway the proposal is to make it the “Sysbey Harbour” or Ireland – which would be great for the west of Ireland. Haulbowline island really needs to get a push and used as a landmark for Cork Harbour! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

On a seperate note – a few posts back I mentioned the use of boardwalks on the quays in Cork – like in Dublin – would be good. Yesterday in Dublin I was walking up town from work and I took the boardwalk route (usually go a different way), it was an experience to say the least! I had to walk past a few groups of people who were eh… a bit intimidating! I was thinking this is majorly dodge! Then on the news this morning, and also on eveningecho.ie, there was a report that the Gardai are cracking down on anti-social behaviour and drug dealing on the Dublin boardwalks! Supposedly over the past few months they have gone down hill big time! Meant to be used to regenerate the city centre and for tourists but that hasn’t gone to plan! Just thought I’d bring it up! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I came home to Cork for the 1st time from Dublin in about 7 weeks last weekend (Always more going on at the weekends in the summer so it’s harder to get down! ๐Ÿ™‚ ) I came under the tunnel and went over the flyover – but I needed to go through the roundabout – missed my exit because I was so fixed on checking out the flyover – it’s good – has a nice view at night time of the city lights/glow! Will be interesting to see in Sept. when the schools are back how the Frankfield hill will be!

The longer I live in Dublin the more I appreciate Cork. Don’t get me wrong – Dublin is fantastic – big city, great buzz, really young. But it’s a breath of fresh air getting around Cork and heading in around town on a Saturday for a walk around the shops. I just hope that if/ when I eventually move back to Cork it won’t have turned into the chaos that Dublin can be now! :p

Wow! Those pics look great! Can’t believe it got planning permission! I hope the stalls on the street are upgraded and maybe some of the English market co’s operating stalls there too! We’ll wait and see! The whole of town will have a great feel to it – from Emmet Place / Academy St – Paul St, all the lanes onto Patrick Steet down to the Grand Parade / Emmet Place & Cornmarket Street! Can’t wait! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey, hate to be going off the point of the last few posts but my brother flew into the new terminal last week. He said there was a really long que for the mens toliet in the baggage reclaim area – you wouldn’t often see a que for a mens toliet even in a night club! ๐Ÿ™‚

The 3 or 4 baggage belts is worrying also – more than 4 or 5 planes land at close enough times and it’s “angry people trying to lug their bags off the belt….!” But we’ll see! At least there’s room for expansion in years to come and we have the old terminal also..just in case! ๐Ÿ™‚

If you could – I’d love to see some pics of Lavits Quay – there’s alot of talk about it but I haven’t seen it in a good while. The Cornmarket Street development from the Tesco carpark view point might be a good one too! ๐Ÿ˜€ The last pic posted from that site was couple of months ago – it would be interesting to see what progree has been made! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

AND – if you’re willing to walk to the Count Hall – perhaps you could get a few snaps of the Kingsley dev. and the latest from the Jurys site!

They are just rumours! I have heard that Debenhams is doing well in Mahon Point, and that it’s keeping the rest of the centre going! They must have signed a lease for a set period of time. Owen O’Callaghan will be looking to extend the centre after the long awaited Academy St. development.

Actually, there hasn’t been much said about that development since the 1st draft of pics were released a while back.

Also, there still are a couple of units empty in Mahon Point (I think so anyways – near the Debenhams end on the ground floor) – strange that they haven’t been snapped up yet!

Who wants another McDonalds / Burger King?? What’s the point of having one in the airport – it’s not at all unique! There’s a Subway & Starbucks there now sure – that’s bound to make the international travellers feel at home! There’s a food market in the dept.lounge – so it sounds like it’s a very unique airport all in all! Which certainly isn’t a bad thing in my mind!

Just found a siter called http://www.cork-spotters.com and on it there are excellent pics of the inside of the new terminal! It looks really well. The food court and seating area are hard to judge because of the shot taken.

I think the toll booths you are talking about are the one’s which you see at the 2 small roundabouts before Fermoy – on the city side. I noted this too. If you’re driving up from the Dunkellte roundabout after the “pink bridge” you can get a glimpse of the bigger toll booth. i think the small one is for those cars coming onto the new bypass from fermoy and the bigger booth is for those coming from the city. That’s what I think – may be wrong. There’s definately a bigger toll booth in place – multiple lanes I reckon. The motorway on the N4 I think from Dublin the “the west” has multiple lanes at the toll booth area.

    Hi,

I was home in Cork last weekend. I drove back up to Dublin Sunday afternoon and I used the Mitchelstown by-pass for the 1st time. To be honest I didn’t time it or anything but it didn’t seem like I was saving time. Way too many roundabouts! The next time I go down to Cork I’ll time it using the old way and then the new way. Traffic wasn’t bad when I left Cork so it was hard to judge but I presume it has made a great difference to the town itself. I heard the Fermoy bypass will be a motorway! Excellent if it is! Does anyone know how long the journey from Crok – Dublin should take when the by-pass is completed?

As regards the airport, I rang Aer Rianta last week and was told the arrivals are opening tomorrow, then the charter flight arrivals/depts and all depts will be up and running around Aug.15th! I can’t wait – I’m going to fly down when it’s open!

Is there a new control tower being built??

A friend landed in Cork while ago from Dublin and texted me and said there are 4 airbridges in the new terminal!!

Nano Nagle Bridge is defo the bridge linking Sullivans Quay to the Grand Parade. Alot of tourists use that bridge to get good shots of St.Finbarrs Cathedral. Parliament Bridge is a fine brodge too – nice views of the Holy Trinity and St.Finbarrs. Let’s hope the Jacobs Mall building will compliment the view also!

I live in Dublin and the other day as I was walking to the bus stop from the IFSC to D’Olier St for the bus I was thinking of the boardwalk which is installed there – having a similar one in Cork. Along the quay from Patricks Bridge to the Coal Quay – lots of new buildings there / people traffic – Opera House and the new Cornmarket St. development. Who know’s. They seem quite popular in Dublin – with a few kiosks along one of them.

The Shakey Bridge, as far as I know, is not so Shakey anymore! But it’ll always be the Shakey Bridge! Great bridge!

The front page of the http://www.eveningecho.ie today has an article about a รขโ€šยฌ100 redevelopment of PuC. I can’t copy the text on here as it is in a PDF format. It will be interesting to see what comes of this!

I totally agree with having another thread for Cork Transport issues. I’m based in Dublin, but everyday I check this site to see what’s going on back home. The more vocal people are about certain issues then the better the chance of them gaining momentum.

As for the NRA pulling funding for the additional fly-overs – what a joke! Forward planning people! Hmmm..lets see, in a couple of years they’ll say oh traffic has moved from the Kinsale roundabout to Sarsfield, so lets build a fly-over there…etc!

Thirdly, what’s going on up at the airport? Thought is was opening last October, then May! I’ve been looking at the Cork Airport website and there’s barely a mention of the new airport. etc., it’s a really poor website. A new site should be put up to coinside with the new terminal.

It will be interesting to see what come’s of the Academy Street dev. plans. I sometimes wonder if the designers actually design a building with extra storys so it will automatically have to be reduced by the council, because I’d reckon the council and other parites involved would never just pass the 1st draft, they would have to feel like they have the power and the last say. Therefore by adding extra storeys or features which are not really needed the council gets to act all high and mightly and the designers can predict this so their real design gets the go ahead anyway! Ok that point was a bit drawn out, but you catch my drift! As regards the Examiner building facade being kept to some degree, for some reason I can’t recall it in my head, will have to check it out over the Bank Holiday when I’m home in Cork! I was over in Birmingham recently, the city is very high rise. Granted some are ugly 1960’s post war council flats but there are alot of high rise offices and apartments. Seemed much more of a high rise than London! The Bull Ring is a new redeveloped shopping area in the city. It’s great, but I was laughing to myself cause most of the decent shops are already in Cork – good ol Mahon Point huh! No place like home ๐Ÿ™‚
