That is of course assuming they actually do replace it!

Is the new development on the same scale as this ?

I can see an outsized block going up here creating the illusion that it’s all the other buildings in the area that are out of synch. Shame, it’s not the prettiest but it does have a charm and probably a lot of history.

Interesting that they where re-building Gerorgian streets in the ‘ Nationalistic ‘ 40’s/50’s.. what happened when the sixties came along though??
It’s a shame they’re knocking them though. I always found them curious, never quite knowing what they where trying to achieve with them…
Incidentaly, nice touch to call that resturant beside Stephens Gn Centre ‘ The Dandelion Market ‘..

I see the Plaza is beginning to ‘wear’ a little. Inevitable I suppose.
Is there a process to keep it clean? So that when the whole street is completed the bits already done won’t look out of place??

It would be a shame to see it become a mere extenison of the Parnell St Cinema belt, but may form an important axis with O’Connell street nonetheless

Rather than pedestrianise it would it be possible to do a ‘ Parliment ‘ street on it ? Trees? Shiny Bins? We would then have this grand ‘vista’ leading to City hall. Traders would still have access…

BTW the AIB on Capel St needs to come down. The view along Mary St ( From Henry ) deserves to be completed with a building, that’s at least symetrical to the road, and possible Grander.

Pretty disapointed to see the huge ‘ There is hope ‘ sign gone ( Rather ironicly ) now that they’ve stared building on the college side of the street again.
I actually moved into the area about a year ago and eventually had to leave because of that very stretch by the Spar. It’s an area choc-a-bloc with interesting sites and has huge potential, but it’s unwelcoming, unsafe and well, Ugly. I believe the Mother Redcap site is to be torn down ?? ( It has also apparently got a listed structure that ISN’T the pub itself?? , Would this be a section of City Wall ? )

Without a doubt the anihalation of whole streetscapes has been detremental in the planning and developing ‘ Mindset ‘ of Dublin. As they did, removing whole sides of streets rendered the opposite side ( Generally left untouched ) redundant. The street loses it’s original shape and purpose and ultimately, cos’ residents on the surviving side might find staring at the donnelly centre or wide swatchs of empty rubbleised space none to pleasent to greeted with when pulling the curtains in the morning, also becomes depressed and void and eventually allowed slip into dereliction. Every road widening scheme of this nature shows these symptoms.

How many City crossroads still maintain the original four corners?

    Cheers
