I must say – I’d love to have a car. It’d be useful on Sundays for excursions out of Dublin etc. That’s probably all I’d use it for really – so it’d be a waste of money.

If you live in the country I suppose it is vital. Cars are brilliant – let’s just seriously ask ourselves: do they really belong in cities to they extent that they do at present?

The odd/even numberplate idea is the type of idea that does work. In Florence for example, I’ve seen the wardens standing at the entances to the city centre checking on the the stickers displayed in windscreens. Green for odd dates red for even I think it goes. The outer city of Siena area is mayhem – hell on earth with traffic [don’t ever try to visit by car – we failed and had to return the next day by train!] but the inner city is beautifully quiet and very lively – full of contented people walking it’s streets in peace and quiet.

Doesn’t the Irish government have a huge amount of money left over from last year that they aren’t spending? That’s what I’ve heard. What’s going on?

Oh MK! Don’t be silly. Of COURSE they know who they are.

It’s defined by their choice of sunglasses, cars, favourite bars and tech stocks.

To be honest – I hate using public transport at rush hour too but mainly because of congestion. Funny, often the most offensive people are the types we’re talking about with their stinking aftershave, horrible nose-picking, mobile-phone-yelling and snott snorting.

I prefer to cycle to and from work. Keeps me fitter, lowers stress and is very enjoyable especially with the addition of cycle lanes. I’m also fortunate in being able to cycle along the coast for much of it.

Why would I want to blow my hard earned savings on a silly 00 BMW?

    Oh JOYOUS indeed!

    What a bunch of arseholes!

No wonder Dublin is so horrible to work in.

Aaahh, yes… once again I’m reminded of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire in Microcosm. Nice to know that when the country’s economy goes down the tubes those people, accustomed to having towels handed to them by black people in the toilettes of their trendy bars [like Fireworks for example]will HAVE to take the bus!

That’s if they have a job to go to that is…

    HA HA HAAAAAA

    Arseholes.

    Hiya Rory

A pleasant greeting in response to a depressing & angry post! It’s nice to be back – I’ll try to be more positive.

    I’ll try…

    I’m afraid Dublin is a S***hole.

Reeking of piss, Strewn with litter, Splattered with vomit, and totally congested with noisy traffic. It’s doing my head in…

I can only agree that banishing all non-corporation/Authority/non-delivery vehicles will be a HUGE step in the right direction.

People will have a shorter working week, be less stressed, more pleasant, and perhaps tend not to contribute to the state of affairs listed at the top of this note.

I don’t suppose it will happen though – seeing as our politicians are so spineless and terrified of upsetting ANYBODY. Especially the new ’80’s style, acquisitive BMW driving types who they seem to think are driving this economy.

Is there a good up to date book on Irish/Dublin Churches?

I’ve run out of interesting things to do at weekends in Ireland and have long wanted to explore its churches [the last refuge of a culture addict living in a cultural desert].

The Protestant Church in Monkstown is worth going into – architecturally not the greatest of quality and a terrible under-use of space but the style is fanciful, very unusual and exciting. Seems it was erected by former RAJ types – hence the Indian style. There’s a service it seems, at 7.30pm.

    So, any good books?

A bit like the way your bodies have been totally replaced every 12 years cell by cell – but you’re still you?

IF the elements are un-sound, falling to pieces then replace them [not with modern crap though..] but to remove the toll booths? Are they serious? Who CARES about congestion? I don’t give a “^%£! Close the the bridge – keep it as a non-functioning object of beauty and history – do that before replacing it.

I could never understand why certain decorative elements disappeared from the original Eiffel Tower – those lovely half wheel/fanlight-esque arches that ran around the second level. Very Jules Verne. Surely if crumbling they could have been faithfully replaced?

    Pity

I believe Gunness are supposed to be pulling out of Ireland {that’s what I heard!} probably because even THEY can’t afford the shagging place anymore!

The ‘Most Cost Effective strategy’ will probably be demolition I wouldn’t be surprised.

All I can say from the picture David is that it looks very nice. ‘Nice’ for me is always sufficient reason to preserve anything in this age of ugliness.

As for it’s true architechtural merits – I can’t say.

    Best of luck!

    Oh, I thought
‘to be restored in ‘a modern art deco-stle’
meant inside AND out. It’s the interior I was exited about as it’s the part that’s been missing all these years. The interiors of Deco buildings were usually the most fabulous part. Also of course a piece of good architecture is NOT simply a facade with a box behind it.

Bonzo, that’s the ‘Burton’ building [as in men’s suits etc.] You’re right though, it IS more Nouveau.

    Opinion?!?

All you have to do is LOOK at it.
I like like gaudy kitsch more than well, anybody… but I just can’t force myself to read the text.

God, why am I picking on such a trivial thing? Richard’s done a great job as it is just making the site.

It’s still there – any idea when it’s to be destroyed? [and no doubt replaced with some crass, cheap piece of crap]

How about 5 years of renovation in Ireland – perhaps we’d learn something and regain some pride?

It’s still generally pathetic on the exterior. Dreadful design. Was it designed by committee?

Oh God, pardon my ignorance but is the Notorious ESB building the one on a street between Upper Mount Street and Baggot Street? I was saying to somebody last week as I passed a huge pebbledashed building how I quite liked it. He said “John! That’s the ESB thing – the one they mutilated the Goergian Mile for and the ESB have been trying to make up for it ever since…”

I was looking at the back of it I think. The front is bland brown precast concrete isn’t it?

If it’s the same building – I must be ill or something. But then I enjoy O’Connell Bridge House too!

Actually, now that I think of it….

I know that it’s like cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face, and it’s unfair to the locals [do they care?] BUT: how about NOT re-building the garage?

    The original is gone.

Why not leave an ugly empty wasteground nestled on the corner of his hotel? Don’t even clear away the debris.

The everlasting monument to O’Callaghan’s greed and insensitivity now a part of his corner of the block.

A reminder to all foreigners who come to stay there of the kind of business he runs. I bet they wouldn’t come back.

A sacrifice for the future of Irish architecture.
