Looking across the Liffey towards the IFSC I was impressed by the magnitude of Stack A.
It could make a perfect museum, gallery or exhibition centre. Are there any plans for the Stack?

This is a bit of a cinderella. The National Museum spent about 150k in the early 90’s about using Stack A as an extension but then dropped the idea when Collins Barracks became available. It was the case a couple of years ago that Sile Dev was thinking of re-loacting the National Maritime museum to the site, much to the alarm of intertested parties Dun Leary (sp. I know). Then a couple of weeks ago Aidan Dunne flew the kite in the Irish Times that the place be used as a venue to show Hughie O’donoghue’s and Sean Scully’s donations to the state, or as an extension for the Hugh Lane ( a la Tate Modern). Since the use of the site as a cultural venue of some kind has been envisaged since the beginnings of the IFSC it’s about time they pulled their fingers out.

I know the architect was John Rennie, who also designed Howth and Dun Laoghaire Harbours. It was built around 1820 with the purpose of storing toabacco and wine (in the vaults) , and was made to be “fire-proof”. A huge banquet for 4000 people, soldiers and civilians, was held there shortly after the Crimean War. It really would be a perfect place for a cultural centre for everybody.
Duncan, can you let me know when you will next visit the stack.

      hello

a PLAY space for the city

i have a link below to a picture of the project i did that got me started on all this stuff in the first place. i would be interested in seeing if there is any kind of reaction.

i feel that the docks are dead today
i want to see them alive

this is an example of what i think would be a lively, safe, everchanging place, which would bring life to the docks, even more life to Dublin and could become a brilliant tourist destination

So does anyone know what is going into Stack House A, they keep announcing that there will be retail and cafes and a museum and that one side will be glass, but they never say what the museum is going to be.

Docklands warehouse to have a £20m facelift
      The Irish Times

The 19th-century warehouse on Dublin’s docks known as Stack A is to be redeveloped next year as a retail, restaurant and cultural venue at a cost of £20 million. Announcing the scheme yesterday, the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, said this final section of the IFSC site to undergo refurbishment was “one of the key aspects to bringing life and heart to the whole area”. Stack A’s transformation will be funded and overseen by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority.

Big plans in store for it now….all in the pipeline.
Is’nt that two/three storey redbrick AIB building down there facing the waterfront truely awful.

Yeah, it is a pity about the AIB building, it blocks the view of the basin from across the river. The new boardwalk is good and the Stack House will look great when the end is glassed. I certainly hope they put in a proper cultural venue, an interactive science museum would be good, local people would use it. It will be such a waste if they put in one of those made up museum that really only exist as a tourist destination, the proposed Dublin museum sounds like it will be like that. I mean tourists are great, but it is important in the case of the North Dock to turn it into a destination for tourists and locals alike.

A science museum would be wonderful. We have no such museums yet although the number of Irish scientists is huge, including Nobel prize winners. Also a History of Architecture
museum would wonderful. The history of Dublin has been done before, bring the tourists into the IFSC so they can be over-charged, lovely. It is time for something fresh and novel, and Bertie, we are an independent nation for almost 100 years, lets start behaving so.

. . . well a single Nobel prize winner is all I’m afraid . . . Maybe with a science museum to encourage youngsters we will win more. To fair too, we do have museums of science, there is the telescope at Birr Castle I think and the glorious National History Museum on Kildare Street. What we are missing in this part of the island is an interactive childrens science center like W5 in Belfast or The Launch Pad in the Science Museum in London.

Ok, Walton was the only nobel laureate in physics; http://www.nobel.se/physics/laureates/1951/walton-bio.html

I want to communicate that there is a lack of awareness for the sciences. A LARGE SCALE interactive museum for the sciences (physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics), not just optical telescopes, would be of huge benefit, to everyone.

And what a perfect place — Stack A.
