30 St Mary Axe, previously known as the Swiss Re Building, and popularly as the Gherkin, was completed in December 2003 and opened in April 2004. Designed by Foster + Partners and the Arup Group with forty-one floors. the building quickly became a recognisable landmark of London. Despite its overall curved glass shape, there is only one piece of curved glass on the building, the lens-shaped cap at the apex.
