The Coole estate was purchased in 1768 by Robert Gregory on his return to Ireland following service with the East India Company.The family house was a large Georgian block with a central Venetian window under a top floor Diocletian window.

When the Gort estate was inherited by Colonel Vereker, later Viscount Gort, in 1797, he decided to employ the world renowned architect John Nash to design the Gothic Style building known as Lough Cutra Castle.
St. Colman’s has been under construction, or at least renovation, for over one hundred years.
