Unbuilt scheme for extension of the Dominican Convent in Wicklow.
The buildings are now part of St. Michael’s Hospital but were constructed as one of the infamous Magdalen Laundries.
The chapel was a later addition to the Romanesque Revival complex, and was designed by S.F.
Detached five-bay two-storey convent, finished in render with granite dressings and block and start quoins with a more elaborate granite entrance porch.
Designed by Cork architect Samuel F. Hynes, for the Archbishop of Melbourne. “The buildings are disposed around a court so as to be well ventilated and lighted.
Although the convent building and school were constructed largely as illustrated – the church was not.
Home of the famous Youghal Lace, the Convent Lace School was opened in 1852 by Mother Mary Ann Smith of the Presentation Convent and the world-famous Youghal Lace was made here.

In 1859 the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Enniscorthy to open a Convent to meet the needs of the poor. In 1860 two rooms were procured and classes for children and adults commenced.
