The hospital started circa 1898 when the Soeurs de Misericorde from Montreal founded a mission in Winnipeg to care for single mothers and their children. A hospital building was constructed between 1899-1900. They quickly expanded and in 1907, it was more than doubled in size with the construction of centre and north (right side in postcard) wings. Designed in a French-Canadian style with mansarded top floor, and the local yellow brick and Tyndall stone. Much expanded since, the core of the building can still be discerned, but the earliest wing, the southern has been demolished. The drum and dome was also removed, sometime in the late 1950s, but the base outline is still visible from aerial photos.
