PTBParticipant
Still though, it didn’t come to mind straight away when I first started looking at this thread. And how many people living abroad would instantly recognise it as as a Dublin landmark? I think that the Spire/Spike will eventually become the landmark associated with Dublin from an international perspective. I believe that the thing was constructed, in part, to create a instantly recognisable landmark for the city. It may not be easy to photograph in a single frame but it may well be the city landmark in twenty years time
PTBParticipantAre all of the hoardings completely gone at this stage? I know that tis a while ago but the pictures show the metal supports for the hoardings still in place.
PTBParticipantWell what would you suggest as a decent landmark paul h?
Looking back at my list at the top of the page it struck me that the Statue of Liberty would be a more universally recognised landmark for New York than the Empire State Building.
PTBParticipantI agree. Certain icons are icons more of a national nature rather than being asociated with any one city although I would imagine that many people would associate the Taj Mahal with Deihi or the Pyramids with Cairo.
PTBParticipantYes washington was very difficult. Capitol hill came close as did the reflecting pool and obelisk. What is a siuatable icon for LA?
PTBParticipantJust a rough list of city icons from around the world off the top of my head.

PTBParticipantThat site looks like a cheap knock-off of archiseek. Or is archiseek an excellent knock off of their site?
Anyhow Lex looks a bit isolated there among those people. I never knew how much we depended on him to keep this thread going. It almost dropped off the recent threads list last night.:(
PTBParticipantI’ve noticed some goings-on in the building on Paul street opposite the Bank of Ireland, The stone one thats set off of the street. Does anyone know whats going in there, or what the building is?
PTBParticipantWell whould’a thunk it?
Nice change from that twee John Hinde crap.
PTBParticipantIt’s strange that a power station is loved so much, especially since that photo shows it sourrounded in a lethal looking smog. I suppose it could have something to do with the fact that it was the last piece of Ireland that many saw leaving the country on a boat in the seventies and eightys. A bit like fasnet rock lighthouse, which became known as Irelands teardrop, for many a tear was shed seeing the last bit of Ireland dissappearing over the horizon.
Well you won’t be seeing it on a postcard anytime soon.
PTBParticipantThats the idea. What tourist shop would sell a model of a power station? Or an “I visited the Ringsend power station” T-shirt. A landmark to call your own.
PTBParticipantNay, the Ringsend power station.
PTBParticipantWhat on earth is all that about?

It would be nice however to see a skyline of signifance. Especailly near the water.
Maybe they can incorporated the highrise in other parts of the city.
Again Maskhadov I disagree with you. This development is proably the first part of the docklands developments that you would see on your way into Cork coming in by Tivoli. Were a large structure to be built here it would, I believe, appear very harsh, coming fron the low trees to a large structure. The current design would ease a transition into taller structures, yet would maintain a landmark look.
PTBParticipant“To design”? I’m sure that I saw a pictureof a model of the new Wexford Opera House in the Irish Examiner about a month or two ago. Anyhow what is the problem with Keith Williams designing this building? Or is the problem with the way in which the contract was given?

It all seems pretty low dentisty. There is a lot of green space.
I’m actually quite surprised that anyone would bemoan the fact that green space is being created. Cork is a city without a great amount of green, open spaces. I quite appreciate the fact that the architects have decided to allocate that much parkland rather than cramming the site with buildings and making more money out of all the office space.

Just imaging driving a motorbike up and down the streets at 8 in the morning. 100 miles an hour, wrong way down the street, or on the pavement. I have to do that some Christmas morning.
Merry St. Stephens day.
PTBParticipantThe titles of this thread seek to get more boring all the time. Rember the good old days of “Look at de state of Cork, like!”. Now there was a name. Can we call this thread “Look at de state of Cork, like! 2” (I’ld put the 2 in roman numerals – more dignified) or have it changed when we move to a new thread like when we moved the old “Look at de state of Cork, like!”?
PTBParticipantAh yes, just the ones. The college development ( GMITor is it NUIG?) is a quite stunning building, one of the most contempary and dramatic looking buildings in the country. I’m quite surprised that it was’nt mentioned before, then again this thread has a very downbeat focus and seems to only concern the negative aspects of developments in the city. Is there any other buildings that recieve positive comments in the city?
PTBParticipantDoes anybody have a picture of the new cinema development that was much acclaimed or the NUIG building with the large copper panon the outside. Saw a picture of it once and it looked very nice.
