fjp-Wolfe tone park and Skateboarders has been touched on before http://www.archforums.com/NonCGI/Forum1/HTML/000658.html

I agree on the headstones issue
In the original Design brief the siting of the headstones was to be an integral part of the design solution
Having passed the park on sunday, the only work to date has been to cast a piece of insitu concrete to the end of the tombstones to hold them in their original position

In the winning design the tombstones were to be set into the inclined grass bank

Inclined grass bank? I hear you ask

    exactly!

Is that the last building before the Cemetary as you approach merrion Row from the green?
If so,I think it was John O’Neill & Associates in Sandymount

Probably want the park to be in pristine condition when the whole development is completed-though that would seem to be quite a way off
maybe they are waiting for a suitable notable, with space in their diary, to open it!

as far as I know the basement is to be developed-if so they might be putting down secant piles to form a retaining wall.

There was a model in the civic offices several months ago of the proposed building.
I think it has about 6 floors
it was on the 3rd floor near the main stairs in the new block.

Toners has (or did, have not been in it for a while)

Doheny & nesbitts had one too at the end of the bar

    PVDZ
The “few” I mentioned were those whose activities caused damage (as seen at the base of the sculpture at the civic offices)
if there was no damage, then I would’nt have an issue with it.Are you denying the destruction occurs?
“And how can you be for diversity when you want these skateboarders to be segregated to an isolated part of the inner city when they are real members of the community and therefore must be embraced? They exsist, deal with it.”

Sorry pvdz, If you check you will find that was gregf.

“Also you mentioned that the regeneration of the city being a priority for the corp. is bringing new people to a formerly dead area not considered regeneration?”

I’m with MG on this one

“curved streetfree of teenie-goths well at least when ever there would be nothing going on in the temple bar music centre and no skaters to be seen except at the skate park in fact probably less strange looking people and all those non-conformists who “litter” our streets with diversity instead we could build a big skate park somewhere people would never go and lock em all up there the odd time passing to knock some of them down on our bikes!”

-First of all, I don’t care what people do so long as it doesn’t result in damage/injury to property/other people. That remains my point.
    -I’m all for diversity
-I would hardly call goths and skateboarders non-conformists
-On the issue of designers anticipating activities like this-we should not allow the thoughtless vandalism of a few to determine the design of our public spaces.

    by extension
would someone who was shopping in the Jervis centre have the right to park their car there?
By the logic expressed above-they have as much right to use the space as anyone else
It is a matter of what is acceptable-In my opinion, due to damage caused by it,scateboarding is not.
You may ask the question, should the corporation provide a venue for skateboarders? But it could be argued that it has greater priorities like regenerating the city centre.

I have to agree with Jas and gregf
its just vandalism. I cant imagine many pensioners or people with prams being inclined to use the park as it is, if there are skaters about.
maybe the previous park wasn’t so bad after all!!!

Breaking news from the irish times

“Vandals pushed a crane into the River Liffey last night, a spokeswoman for Dublin Corporation said.

Gardaí have sealed off the south quays, causing traffic disruption to morning commuters, while efforts to salvage the machine begin.

The crane was being used on refurbishment work on the landmark Ha’Penny bridge.

The spokeswoman said vandals mounted a floating pontoon and pushed the crane into the water. She could not confirm the value of the crane or if it would be written off.

A Garda spokeswoman said the closure was to facilitate “emergency repair work”.”

    Idiots!

    From todays Independent…

Green light for historic Nestlé site

THE ambitious and controversial development proposed for the Nestle Rowntree site, opposite Kilmainham Jail in Dublin 8, has just been granted the green light by the capital’s planners and already a pre-let has been agreed.

The scheme, by Charmside Ltd (a Treasury Holdings company) will be located on a four acre site opposite the South Circular Road entrance to the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. The site was in use up to eighteen months ago as a manufacturing base for Nestle Ireland and was subsequently acquired by Treasury for almost £10m

The new development, a variation of one already under appeal with an Bord Pleanala, will comprise three office blocks, capable of sub-division, with a lettable area of 32,217 sq.m. There are 572 parking space, a large restaurant, creche, 625 sq.m gymnasium and ample retail and tourism space which will be at ground floor level.

Strategically located between the city centre and the M50, the site has prominent corner frontage with views of the Phoenix Park to the rear. It is also five minutes walk from the refurbished Heuston Station and new Luas Davitt Road line.

However, the scheme has its opponents who are currently objecting to a separate planning permission granted earlier this year. They argue that the development will loom over the jail and its Victorian streetscape and could impact on tourism in this area. The appeals board is due to make a decision on the earlier permission next month, according to Treasury Holding’s John Bruder.

Mr Bruder is hopeful that a decision will not be delayed because there is already a pre-let agreed for space here, subject to planning. Contrary to many market reports, John Bruder says there is a great deal of domestically-generated demand for office space. Two different occupiers are seeking 6,500 sq.m. in Kilmainham and Central Park. This is the large office park project in Sandyford, Co Dublin that is 50pc owned by Treasury Holdings. Offices in the proposed new Spencer Dock development and on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay are also in demand, mostly from indigenous companies, he reports.
